ISRO to launch new satellite soon

By Our Staff Reporter

The Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation, G. Madhavan Nair, with

Mata Amritanandamayi at the launch of the Satellite Based Education and Research

Network at Amritapuri, near Kollam, on Saturday.

KOLLAM, MAY 15. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman, G.

Madhavan Nair, has said the ISRO would soon launch a satellite exclusively for

serving the rural population of the country.

Inaugurating the Satellite-Based Education and Research Network (SBERN) of the

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham (AVV) at Amritapuri near here today, Dr. Madhavan

Nair said education had to be given prime importance in a country where large

sections of the population fall below poverty line.

While the urban areas of the country had several technological means to access

the facilities, villages do not. Those in the high-tech areas like the space

research would have cause to feel contended if they could play a part in taking

these facilities to the reach of the rural population.

These facilities would include those for education, medical care and other basic

needs. He said the ISRO was seriously probing this aspect and very soon the

satellite facility to have a better access for the educational needs would be

reaching even the primary schools in the rural areas. The exclusive satellite is

being launched with this aim, he said.

The SBERN project was launched in association with the ISRO and the Cognizant

Technology Solutions. Along with the launch at AVV, Amritapuri, the project was

also simultaneously launched at the Amrita Institute of Science and Technology,

Bangalore, the AVV at Coimbatore and the AVV College of Medicine, Kochi. With

the launch of the project all the four centres are now linked by satellite.

Giving her blessings for the SBERN, Mata Amritanandamayi said knowledge of

science was important for it raised the standard of live. Yet scientific

knowledge alone would not make one's life complete. Spiritual knowledge was also

equally necessary. The beauty of society lies in the communication between

hearts. Spirituality was the real peacemaker. The project on the AVV's Kochi

campus was launched by the director of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, S.

Banerjee, on the Coimbatore campus, by the secretary, Department of Science and

Technology, V. S. Ramamurthy, and on the Bangalore campus by the president of

Hewlett-Packard, Balu Doraisamy.
