Body, Mind & Intellect: A User's Guide

Swami Ramakrishnananda Puri

Someone asked Amma, "Why cant you take rest? You have been giving

darshan for so many hours every day for the past 30 years. Dont you

get bored doing the same thing, listening to the same problems and

stories? What is the secret of your undying enthusiasm and

inspiration?"

Amma replied, "It is all because of my love for my children. What

wouldn't a mother do for her child? Where there is love, there is no

tiredness or boredom."

It is this love that keeps Amma in Her body. Actually, She can

discard the body at anytime She wants. Many years back, when I was

talking to Amma one day, I spotted an insect crawling on Her head.

When I tried to remove it, it went into Her hair and disappeared from

view. I became concerned that the insect might bite or sting Her, so

I put my fingers into Her hair to take it out. As I was passing my

fingers through Her hair, I was surprised to feel a very soft spot on

the top of Her head. It was so soft that I felt that even a piece of

her skull might be missing. So, just to make sure that Her skull was

in proper condition, I again tried to feel that spot on the top of

Her head.

At that point Amma pushed away my hand and said, "What are you doing?"

I said, "Amma there's something wrong with your head. I think a piece

of your skull is missing."

Amma replied, "Don't be foolish. It's supposed to be like that."

"Why, Amma?" I asked.

Amma said, "That is the place through which the yogis withdraw their

life-force when they exit this world. (She was referring to the

sahasrara chakra). They can do it at anytime they want and give up

their body." I felt like a real fool, but I was extremely amazed by

Amma's answer, because I had read about that in some books, but I had

never seen any proof of it until that day.

I checked my sahasrara chakra; it was hard as a rock.

Having heard this, please do not try to verify this story by touching

Amma's sahasrara chakra when you come for darshan.

So the only purpose of Amma remaining in the body is to help Her

children to overcome their problems and help them reach the goal. In

other words, whatever Amma does is for our ultimate good, though we

may not be aware of it.

Amme Sharanam,

ota
