To walk or ride for health, environment and enlightenment

Namah Shivaya,

It also occurs to me that the health aspect in that

statement might have been secondary, another way to

convince people to walk. I've read numerous passages

where Amma tells Her children to do things the "hard"

way for two reasons: 1) To not add to environmental

waste/abuse, and 2) So we don't take things for

granted. If we don't take comforts for granted, we

appreciate them more when we have them.

It's also a means for achieving freedom from

attachment. Look at Nealu's experience when he was a

young monk: He said that after sleeping outdoors for

many months, you get used to it, and after that you

realize that you can be comfortable anywhere. Compare

that to the person who is used to sleeping on a

foot-high matress every night - they're only

comfortable in a few places.

So, all this babbling is leading to this, I guess:

Ride a bike or walk whenever possible because it will

help dissolve our attachment. And it's good for you!

:)

Namah Shivaya,

Gabriela

P.S. I currently drive everywhere. In other words,

that wasn't a sermon!
