Namah Shivaya.

I think this statement has more relevance in the Indian context than

in the context of the US because of the lifestyle.... not sure how

this fits in with Europe, Canada, or the rest of the world.

I think this is a good example of a master customising a teaching in

the context of the situation.

The only thing I am taking from what Amma has said is this: Do

whatever you can to maintain a good health, because that is your

medium for spiritual sadhana too.... 'How' I can achieve it may

differ from place to place and time to time (and I mean no

disrespect to Amma or Her suggestions when I make that statement).

The reason I write so is that I believe Amma was merely providing an

example of how one can think of ways and means to maintain one's

health; not necessarily imposing the walk or the bicycle as a rule.

The fine line between the general principle and the means is not

immeditely visibile in this example, and hence this comment.... I

would go so far as to say that treating the example as a general

principle is mis-interpreting the teaching.

With that said and going to a much broader context, I wonder if all

(or a major part of) religious violence is a result of (extreme) mis-

interpretation of contextual teachings.

Oh! how Maya Devi works in our lives!

Namashivaya,

If you read Amma's words again - She has said "Use a bicycle, whenever possible"

and "if we can get somewhere in time on foot, always walk". So this should

apply everywhere - it's up to us to use our discrimination to identify where

it is applicable. I'm sure that even in Europe and Canada there are places where

you could walk instead of driving/taking an elevator or cycle instead of

driving.

True. true. that is my point too... use 'discernment' when applying

any master's teachings (i don't like the word 'discrimination'; it's

a personal thing).

Girish, I am not disagreeing with you; i think we are talking the

same thing.... if you see my choice of words, I said "more"

relevance, not "total" relevance.... which implies a degree, not an

absolute-ness (for lack of knowledge of the correct noun

for 'absolute'; I am not convinced that 'absolution' is the right

word here)

All I am saying is that specifics sometimes get mistaken for

the "rule"... in this case the "rule" is to maintain good health,

and Amma gave an example of using 'more bicycle' to do the same in

the context of teaching (most probably) to Indians at the time She

made that statement.

I was only attempting to initiate a discussion on that theme that

most of us may have experienced (or will defintely experience), not

oppose or debunk what Amma is saying.

IMMORTAL LIGHT - Spiritual Life

The value of celibacy

Children, those who are unmarried, should conserve their vital

energy by maintaining celibacy. To turn what we gain by this into

ojas (vitality), we also need to do sadhana. With increase in ojas,

our intelligence, memory, health and beauty will also increase. We

will gain lasting mental quietude.
