Guest guest
Yogamanji and others, Do you know what Amma says about chanting the Khadgamala? The discussion on the various devis in the Sri Chakra (in another group) is very interesting. Does meditating on each of the 108 devis in the Sri Chakra offer specific benefits? (Amma has said that it is sufficient if one chants the LS to Lalitha Devi everyday). Finally, am a little skeptical (and chicken of doing any mantra/practice that Amma (my Guru) has not recommended. Is it ok to listen (online) to the voice of another Guru who chants such hymns in praise of Devi? Especially, since it is said initiation can be transmitted through voice. Guest guest
Of course, Amma gives general guidelines to Her children. At the same time, asked the same question about spiritual practice and/or other spiritual teachers by two different individuals, She has been known to give two completely different (and seemingly contradictory) answers. This is (one aspect of) Her Divine nature, that She knows what each of us needs, and tailors Her responses accordingly. For this reason, if you are concerned, I would consider asking Her directly next time you see Her, or praying for subtle guidance. I've often found clarity through dreams or meditation. Personally, though, I feel that there is a difference between seeking the initiation of another guru, and simply listening to another guru chant in praise of G-d. I say this because it sounds like the object of devotion here is Devi, not the other guru. Also, just personally, while I can't imagine myself seeking mantra initiation from another guru, I do sometimes chant mantras that were not specifically given by Amma but that I've learned in other contexts (e.g., Gayatri mantra, Mrityunjaya mantra). I don't see these holy mantras as any kind of denial of my relationship with Amma, or even as in any way separate from Her (and perhaps this is related to the spaciousness with which She answered me when I asked her what my spiritual practice should be). When Swami asked me whom I worshipped last year prior to my mantra being assigned, I told him "Christ" and Amma directed my mantra that way. I would like to have Amma change that but am not sure how to go about asking Her to do so. I currently chant the mantra Mother gave me, but also chant one to Her; I woul, tho, prefer that She make a formal change for me and bless the new one as She did the last. Any suggestions? Guest guest
We had a lot of people ask this question on the darshan lines last year. We were told to tell people to simply ask Mother when you go for Devi Bhava darshan (the night She gives mantras) -- same as you would if you were asking for the first time. Guest guest
OTA: Amma once told me that we should not chant mantras with beejas like HrIM ayeiM etc without a Guru's diksha. So going by that it may seem that Amma does not recommend the Khadgamala without formal initiation. Then again it can be said that the K. is not a mantra but a stotra and stotras dont need formal initiation (unless you are planning on the full associated ritual). Karumayi Amma who is also fairly conservative on mantras has adviced chanting of the K. So IMHO it is OK to chant K.(her CD on K. is really wonderful) BTW it is usually traditional to have one Satguru and several vidya- gurus(vidya is a mantra of female gender); so I think it is OK to chant other mantras even if Amma is your Guru. In the end follow your conscience tells you!! -yogaman Ammachi, "one_tiny_atom" <one_tiny_atom> wrote: > Yogamanji and others, > Do you know what Amma says about chanting the Khadgamala? Guest guest
Beloved Dixieji, Just to give a head's up- Amma may or may not agree to give you a new mantra. If you have a deep attachment to Christ on some level, She may tell you to stick to that mantra. This was the case with my friend who got a Krishna mantra and then later asked Amma for a mantra to Her. She laughed and said, "what is the differance?" Since then my friend has really enjoyed her Krishna mantra, and has told me that when chanting it she feels Amma's love very strongly. I also know someone who got a new mantra from Amma. It really made a big differance for him, as the original mantra was to Christ and the new one was to Devi. What happened in his case was that his mother had become a born again, and it built up a lot of confusing feelings about Christ in him. Chanting that mantra brought up such strong emotions that he could not focus. Here's a passage from Amma's Manasa Puja: "Mother asked you to invoke Devi only because we are going to do archana with the thousand names of Devi Lalita. Whatever name we use, She will know that we are calling Her. Some children call their mother chechi or akka (elder sister), but the mother knows that they are calling her. She knows that it is just a habit of the child. In the same way, our Mother also does not mind whatever name we use in addressing Her." -Amma love, Brianna --- Dixie Thacker <dixielou wrote: > > - > ammasiswari > Ammachi > Saturday, April 03, 2004 6:57 PM > Re: Khadgamala stotram > Namaste, > > While we're talking about mantras, I need to pose > a question. Guest guest
Dear Yogamanji,Iswariji, Thank you for your responses. After hearing your views, this atom feels, its better off sticking to what Amma (Mata Amritanandamayi) has advised in general, which is Guru mantra and LS. Snehalataji, I just got reminded of your string theory . Dont want to end up like an atom with the wrong vibrations, after doing other things out of curiosity! Guest guest
Namah Shivaya OTA, Sounds like you are acting wisely. There is so much out there to experiment with that it seems to me that I can get confused and my experiences diluted by "dabbling". I keep hearing Amma whisper to me, "Simplify". Jai Ma! Guest guest
- one_tiny_atom Ammachi Sunday, April 04, 2004 1:18 PM Re: Khadgamala stotram Namaste Ota and all, Dea Ota, you've lost me here! You're absolutely correct about my fascination with string theory-to realize that the entire physical cosmos supports my belief that, despite the smallness of the level you consider, there is only One, delights my heart. Curiosity? Yes; how can we doubt when when the whole universe confirms our faith? As far as ending up with "wrong vibrations" from doing things "out of curiosity," I certainly hope you're wrong! In my mind, it's been much more a matter of growth than curiosity. I was so attracted to Amma that I made a 14 hour journey to Iowa last summer without really knowing anything more than that I had to give myself to Her and that She could help me find what I had always been searching for. Unfortunately, when Swami asked what diety my mantra should be turned towards, I was not able to make what I considered (at that time) to be the equivalent of a renunciation of Christ and asked that my mantra be directed towards Him. It's taken a year of intense prayer, meditation, and japa to understand Swami's initial comment that loving Both was not a contradiction - that one can have "an historical guru" and a "living guru" (Swami's words). It seems, since Mother must have been aware of my confusion, but gave me a mantra and spiritual name anyway, that She accepted what was occuring in my heart. Perhaps if I ask for a mantra that reflects my love for Her, She will continue to understand and not judge me harshly. Thank you, Ota, for taking the time to respond. I do intend to consider your suggestion further and examine my own heart as closely and as objectively as I can - to rephrase an old saw, if you perceived smoke, perhaps I missed the fire. At Amma's lotus feet with love, Snehalata Snehalataji, I just got reminded of your string theory . Dont want to end up like an atom with the wrong vibrations, after doing other things out of curiosity! Guest guest
Omanaji, Thank you for your reassuring words. Means a lot. Snehalataji, Never meant the 'wrong vibrations' to you personally. Though I do find your fascination with string theory to be fascinating It is said that the rishis (sages) 'visualized' mantras which were then converted into audible sounds. [if this atom's memory is good, Deepak Chopra once showed that, the word 'Om' when resonated correctly over a bowl of water, brought about an image of the Sri Chakra to its surface.] Dabbling with unknown strotras (which may contain mantras) without my protectress with me, is not something this atom can handle. Amma has answered through all of you. Thank you! Holding on to Amma's lotus feet, ota
