We should do our duty with the attitude that we are serving God, then our work will not be just putting in time for earning a salary. We will be sincere and attentive in our work. The first quality that a spiritual aspirant should have is complete sraddha (awareness and attention) for the work at hand." I take this to mean that I should focus on this quality as the first one I should master before trying to master other qualities Amma mentions. Any thoughts? Also, I notice it sincerely helps me to focus when I have a photo of Amma in front of me. I do my homework at my dining table, and I have a small, 5X7 of Amma framed on the table. Last night as I was plugging away at my math, I kept saying, "Amma! I got it right! Thank you!" And it was so easy to sit and do math for two hours. Guest guest
I would highly reccomend a book " Meditation, Ecstasy and Spiritual Illumination" by Swami Ashokananda which deals on this topic. There's an essay titled "Meditate While You Work" which goes into the topic of integrating work-life with your spiritual life. You can order it from http://www.vedanta.com I hope to excerpt portions of it on this list soon.
