AHMEDABAD: A huge crowd gathered at the Gujarat Law

Society ground to have a ‘darshan’ of the “hugging

sanyasin” Mata Amritanandmayi Devi, popularly called

Amma, here on Wednesday.

The crowd grew ecstatic as Amma entered, walking on a

red carpet, with her famous smile and arms stretched.

The programme began with distribution of cheques to 12

destitute women on behalf of the Mata Amritanandmayi

Math. Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who was also

present, touched Amma’s feet and she gave him a hug.

Seated on the stage, with a constant smile on her

face, Amma then delivered the much-awaited speech, in

Malayalam.

“Love is the essence of all religions and hatred is

behind wars and terrorism,” said Amma. “She believes

that just by a simple gesture of hugging, one can

reduce the pain of others,” said Dhyan Amrit, one of

the followers. This was followed by ‘bhajans’ and

Amma’s ‘darshan’.

Amma is famous for her ‘aalingan’ which she promises

to each one present at the venue.

What is "aalingan" (last paragraph of article)?

Gujarati for hug?
