They're full of typos and horrid English. But they are cheap. I can find them in Toronto's Little India for about $3 or 4 CDN. If you're serious about learning basic Malayalam, I would recommend the CD-ROM from Vidyarambham http://www.vidyarambham.com/ There's also the transcription book available from MA Centre, if you want to learn to read and write the alphabets and to recognize the words in bhajans. But it won't give you any practical vocabulary for use while traveling in Kerala. MA Center used to offer a Malayalam cassette and flash cards, but I don't see this in the latest Mothersbooks catalog. Guest guest
Dear Sister Brianna, My husband is a native Tamil speaker, and I have tried to learn some Tamil also. However, it is VERY difficult for my tongue to wrap itself around the sounds/words! I wish you the best of luck on your quest to learn Malayalam. (And, from what I have learnt, Malayalam is a cross between Sanskrit and Tamil, so the two languages are related.) Have you thought about asking one of the Malayees in your local satsangh for some language lessons? Or, try looking at your local Hindu temple. I know that our temple offers Tamil classes. Maybe a local university has a South Asia department that teaches classes (I live pretty close to UofM, and they offer an intensive Tamil class), or at least a native Malayalam speaker that is going to school there and would like a little bit of extra money to tutor you. Also, I have found it helpful to listen to music in Tamil (I bought the Tamil bhajans CD and have a few CDs of Tamil film music). This helps me by making the sounds/words more familiar rather than just a bunch of unfamiliar noise to my American ears. Best of luck!!
