Guest guest
Om namaha shivaia Dear Len / Kalipadma This is not very related to Amma, but.... It seems to me that you are interested in religious traditions and answering your last week mail .... we also have Santa Claus (called in Italian Babbo Natale, that is something like Father Christmas). He comes on the 24th in the evening or the next morning, after having read all children’s letters, etc... and put the gifts underneath the Christmas Tree. Befana comes on the morning of 6th January to bring gifts to good children and (sugar)-coal: black to not-so-good children, white to good children (black or white tastes good, he he he). She is not a witch, she is a very very sweet old lady, very poor (she comes with broken shoes on a sorghum broom) but unfortunately very ugly because she has a very very big nose (so that she scaries a little the not-so-good children and they promise to behave better). You have to hang your sock on the door (if you don’t have a fireplace) and she will put in it coal, oranges, nuts, a little present, etc. This tradition comes from the Three Kings bringing Gold, Incens and Mhyrr to the newly born Child; infact they arrive on the 6th. That day is also the day in which we dismount the Christmas Crib and the Christmas tree. It is said that: “Epifania tutte le feste porta via” (Befana’s day, she carries all holidays away). We also have Saint Lucy (Santa Lucia) the night between the 12th and 13th of December she also brings small presents to children. Hopes this makes you happy.
