Guest guest
Math ready to construct more houses (The Hindu) http://www.hindu.com/2004/01/09/stories/2004010903520400.htm THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JAN. 8. The Mata Amritanandamayi Math has expressed its willingness to construct more houses for the poor under the "Amritakudeeram" housing scheme, if the State Government was ready to provide land for this purpose. Speaking at a press conference here today, Mata Amritanandamayi appealed to the Chief Minister, A.K. Antony, who visited the math, to provide land for the scheme as in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The construction of as many as 139 houses in the land provided by the State Government in Ernakulam was nearing completion, she said. Though the math had handed over several houses for the poor, the owners sold some of the houses as they were not near their work place. The math would take care to see that houses are constructed near the work places of the poor in future, she added. She also urged the youth to take more interest in social services rather than spending money for New Year celebrations. Similarly, aping of Western culture should be avoided, she said. The Chief Minister held discussions on various social service activities carried out by the math in various parts of the State. Later, Mr. Antony said the Government would extend all possible help to the activities carried out by the math. He, however, said that it was difficult for the Government to find out land and hand it over to the math for the construction of houses for the poor similar to that done in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The Agriculture Minister, K.R. Gouri, who held discussions with the spiritual leader, said the Agriculture Department and the math would jointly implement an agriculture scheme under which medicinal plants and fruits would be cultivated in an area of 30 acres at Vallikkavu in Kollam provided by the math. The Agriculture Department would provide the technical expertise and the upkeep of the farm would be taken care by the math. The scheme would help to provide employment for several agriculturists, Ms. Gouri said. The Union Minister, O. Rajagopal, and members of the royal family of erstwhile Travancore also paid respects to the spiritual leader.
