But sure enough, that's what happens. Major >privacy issue. Have been operating under a wrong assumption. Dear List >Administrator, is there anyway to address this? I was very disheartened to hear of the problems she encountered. First, only members can view the archive of all the messages. Of course, all those messages carry the senders email address. However, anyone can join the list. Once they join, they get full access to thhe archives. Not much protection there! There is a setting where by members can hide their email addresses. Here is 's description of this feature: "Allow members to hide their email address from the group. Your group will not be able to use the Polls feature. Members who hide their email address will not be able to post messages via email. Once you have selected this option, you may not change it later." I am not sure if each member has the choice to hide their address or it works for everyone. It is the statement that members who do can not post via email. I quess they can only post by being on line to . Because of the last statement, I want to learn more about this option before presenting it to the List. I will be away for the Holidays starting tomorrow (Dec 20th) and will return on the 27th. I should have access to a computer so I can check the List. Once I get back, I will look into this further. In the meantime, I wish everyone a most Joyous Chritmas! Wamest regards, Peter "Kandar" White Ammachi List moderator
Guest guest
I became aware of this issue some time ago and felt some concern. I apologize for not bringing it to the attention of the group and moderator sooner. It would be ideal if there were some way to prevent Google and other SE's from spidering the messages, but I'm not sure if it is possible to do so (?) Guest guest
I¹m the moderator of another list. If the moderator changes the settings so that you can¹t browse the archive unless you join the forum, it¹s my understanding that Googlebot (Google¹s spider) and other SE spiders will no longer be able to access the archives or current messages. The drawback to this is that people searching for Amma-related topics may not find the forum and thus join it. Why all the privacy concern? Here I am, world Rick Archer my real name. Catch me if you can! on 12/19/03 5:28 PM, khd5 at khd5 wrote: > I became aware of this issue some time ago and felt some concern. Guest guest
Jai Ma! My own concern is related to a safety issue connected with my past and stems from a desire to prevent personal information from being so readily available, particularly with regard to my whereabouts. Nonetheless, I understand that it is my responsibility to protect my identity online and not the moderators, and that this is something I should have thought of this prior to joining. Guest guest
Namah Shivaya dear Kandar. When I searched under my email address, nothing came up from this list, only the hindu net list, leading me to believe that google may not have picked this list up and causing me to believe that the spam I've been getting, eg from ISKON was from the hindu net weave. Being aware of the issue, a list member can use a pseudonym as some already are doing and then just be more careful not to identfy themselves in some other way. But it might be a good idea to explain this issue to those joining the list so they can be aware of their options. Have a wonderful holiday and thank you so much for the way you attend to our list, by Amma's grace. premarupa Aum Amriteshvaryai Namah
