Guest guest
Hari Om! I've mentioned before that one of my very best friends in the world is very Christian (non church-going, accepting of all faiths). Well, we had an interesting conversation recently that made me realize how little faith I still have. I had read about satellite images that showed what appears to be a man-made bridge linking India and Sri Lanka: ### The bridge's unique curvature and composition by age reveals that it is man made. The legends as well as Archeological studies reveal that the first signs of human inhabitants in Sri Lanka date back to the a primitive age, about 1,750,000 years ago and the bridge's age is also almost equivalent. This information is a crucial aspect for an insight into the mysterious legend called Ramayana, which was supposed to have taken place in treta yuga (more than 1,700,000 years ago). In this epic, there is a mentioning about a bridge, which was built between Rameshwaram (India) and Srilankan coast under the supervision of a dynamic and invincible figure called Rama who is supposed to be the incarnation of the supreme. ### I was jumping up and down saying to my friend, "Isn't it amazing??? I can't believe it!" The whole time he was like, "Yeah, that's really interesting." I finally asked him why he wasn't as excited about it as I was and he said something like this: "I'm not surprised they found a bridge because I already have faith. This doesn't increase my faith. Also, finding 'proof' like this isn't going to change the minds of people who choose not to believe in God. So, it's really neat, but it's not surprising." I realized he was right. I was excited because it offered me some "proof", both to back up my own belief and to take to others, like my parents, to say, "See? It's REAL - what I believe has value!" In other words, I lack faith. Luckily, Amma knows this and has prescribed spiritual practice for me, and practice makes perfect! Jai Ma! Guest guest
Gaby devi, some people are just not ready or cannot yet feel to accept God or spirituality. My close friend is a distinguished professor at University of Miami and she argues me down about God all the time (we love our debate). "Are you wasting your time and money on that swami guru crap again this summer?" that's her, but you know, she is a good, extremely smart, conscientious person but I find her very emotionally & creatively shallow (she finds me intellectually undercooked next to her). Where she stands in the big scheme, she only knows facts and can't accept God because she really can't yet in her life develop or concieve of a "god concept". Our friendship helps both of us evolve though, she likes to argue with me about God and that's how i spoon feed her spirituality while she works my intellect. Then on the other hand, a co-worker came over to my apartment and saw my altar and suddenly got weird.. "you know what you're doing is wrong" she said "the bible says not to worship idols". I tried to explain hinduism to her and comparative religious concepts and it was totally futile.. after I talked at length.. she countered back very sincerely agitated and worried with something like "No, YOU don't understand! There is God, Jesus is God's son, and Jesus wrote the Bible.. and if you don't do what it says in the bible then you will go to hell for ETERNITY... blah blah yatta yatta" nothing could move her from these faulty concepts because - and i say it only honestly - she was too simple minded to understand any more than that and we parted ways in misunderstanding. I guess what I want to say is that you just can't seek validation outside of yourself... and maybe even the need to be validated is a by-product of the ego in us. I feel like reading the desiderate after these thoughts... Jai Maaa "Desiderata Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let not this blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams; it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy." --- Max Ehrmann, 1927 In a message dated 12/19/03 5:37:47 AM Eastern Standard Time, Ammachi writes: << Message: 1 Thu, 18 Dec 2003 08:00:41 -0800 (PST) Miranda Soliz <msoliz2000 Struggle for Faith "I'm not surprised they found a bridge because I already have faith. Guest guest
Namaste Everyone, WOW! I have never been more enthralled in emails!!! I am so hypnotized. For some reason I was not able to open up the other pictures on the bottom. I even went into the NASA web site and did a search but couldn't find the pictures. I would really love to see these if there is any other way to look them up please let me know. I am such an archaeologist at heart. Its one of my passions! And when it is combined with spiritual aspects. It enthralls me that much more. I put that page in my favorites so I can search the other articles on there that I found interesting. Like the underwater city! Thank you so much for sharing this with us. All my love! At Amma's Lotus Feet, Robin Hari Om! I'm working really hard on this, and am also struggling to let go of attachment to others' opinions of me and/or my beliefs, but it is awfully slow going. About the time I think I've make a teeny teeny bit of headway, I blow myself right back out of the water again. On the other hand, we can perhaps both assume that we're being given opportunities to grow...don't know about you, but if this keeps up, I'll be about fifty feet tall by next year.
