Program below aired on ABC Radio National (Australia's

version of CBC Radio One, or National Public Radio).

Amma is certainly trying to eliminate dowry, i.e. the

dowry-free mass marriage ceremony during

Amritavarsham. BTW, it's not just Hindu marriages.. I

learned on this program that Muslims get bankrupted by

dowry too!

Defying Dowry

 

Marriage in India is a marketplace and the payment of

a high dowry has become a way for a bride’s family to

secure a "good catch", a doctor or high ranking civil

servant. But some young women have hit the headlines

recently for refusing to give in to the demands for

cash, TV's, washing machines and air conditioners made

by the grooms’ families. This takes courage, as

sometimes a bride is burned to death if she does not

pay up.

Even Indian Christians and sikhs are involved too. Its

a stereotype (by western media)that dowry system

exists amomg Hindus alone. Even casteism exists very

well among Indian Muslims, Christians and Sikhs.
