Here's one a friend tells about his visit to Amritapuri. When H. arrived at Amritapuri, he found that his roommate, who was from Eastern Europe, was ill. He inquired sympathetically about the nature of the illness, and the roommate told him that he would be fine in two days because Amma had told him so. It seems that the roommate before my friend H. was assigned to that room was a man from Italy. When the Italian saw X (don't know his name) lying in bed all day, he became angry and in a very insulting way accused X of being lazy. X said he would have slugged the guy but he didn't have the strength. Then the Italian went to see Amma and have his first darshan. When he arrived at Amma's lap, she said to him, "You have a roommate, don't you? And he's sick, isn't he? Please assist him to come here for darshan right now!" So the Italian went and got X and helped him to darshan. Amma called a doctor from the clinic right away, and told him to take care of X. Then she said, "Don't worry, you'll be fine in three days!" The Italian was so freaked out by this that he left the ashram! Meanwhile my friend H reported that his roommate X did indeed become fine by the third day! Coincidence?! I don't think so! Personally, I am really wishing I were India this week, and I'm feeling somewhat disconnected even though I know that is not possible. Do you hit spells where you feel like you're making no "progress" (read not glowingly awakened yet!)? It seems like this should occur in the twinkling of an eye - is it an issue of faith, staying attached by wishing it were otherwise? I do notice a strong correlation though to whether I say my mantra or not. This will sound strange, but I notice certain odd things happen when I say it. I've never been particularly psychic or anything, only a few weak experiences over the years that could easily be explained away. Well, one night after people on the board were discussing the chanting of the LS, I tried a bit of it before going to bed. The next morning, I went to school like I normally do. My dearest friend in the world who I love very much has a class right after mine, so he is usually on campus just as I am leaving, though I don't usually see him. Even though it's not usual to see him, that morning as I walked to my car I suddenly had this very strong impression that he was NOT on campus, and that he would miss his class because he overslept - something he hasn't done once in all the time I've known him. I brushed it away and laughed at myself (I'm generally very rational). Guess what... He overslept and missed his first class that morning! We couldn't believe the "coincidence" when I told him. I still didn't practice meditation regularly for many weeks. Yesterday, however, I wore my new wrist mala and on my 25 minute drive into work I chanted on it saying my mantra a good 200 or more times. In the middle of the day, I was standing at the counter (I work retail) alone and I thought I smelled roses. I couldn't believe it because I've read about that happening to some on the group, and it wasn't so much an external smell as a sense of roses. So, I'm more and more convinced of the power of mantra to awaken something deep within me, the oneness with others (as in my ability to know where my friend was that morning) and my connection to Amma. I'm in Texas but my heart is in India in the lap of my mother. I'm getting roadrunner installed this week so I can watch some of the live broadcast (if they ever send out instructions!). Guest guest Posted September 23, 2003 Report Share Posted September 23, 2003 Is the comment below intended as a correction to 1+9+5+3 = 9, or is it meant to point out a symbolic significance to the number 18? The former is a numerological "rooting" of the birthyear, derived by adding the digits of the literal sum (18). Numbers are rooted by adding their digits (and perhaps the digits of their sums as well) until the result is an integer between 1 and 9. The sacred number 108, of course, also roots to 9. I'm not deep into numerology at all, but some of the traditional meanings of 9 that I'm aware of include the end, the culmination of something; also of course the process of gestation leading to birth, and therefore motherhood. An appropriate number to associate with Amma, it would seem. Yes. I think everyone does, at some time or the other. There are many ways of describing it. A lowering of energy. Dark night of the soul (Christian Theology). Maya overpowering us (Hindu explanation). and so on. Amma says that going on a spiritual journey is like flying in an airplane... You never know if the plane is actually flying or still. But the trouble is that, you realize that only AFTER it occurs. BEFORE that, it is a mystery. Enlightenment has often been likened to a joke - you either get it or you don't. There's no charm in having to explain a joke to someone; he should be able to laugh immediately as it is told. Likewise with enlightenment. Poor God!
