Guest guest
I am interested in the Lalita Sahasranama. Can anyone tell me how one chants in Sanskrit and, at the same time, derives meaning from the practice though one does not understand the language? Thanks! Guest guest
om amritesvaryai namah dear dharma bum, i would suggest buying both the Sri Lalita Sahasrama audio cassette and the book The Thousand Names of the Divine Mother from the MACenter bookstore (go to www.ammachi.org). Amma has said don't worry about the meanings right away. She says that one doesn't need to know about all the different types of metal that go into building the airplane in order to reach the destination....just get in and go. Amma has said that chanting these holy Names will bring you both material and spiritual prosperity, regardless of whether or not you know the meaning of each mantra...although, the book i mentioned will give them. Guest guest
om amritesvaryai namah i forgot to mention, there are 2 books: the arcana book, which is small and just has the Thousand Names, as well as Amma's 108 Names and other mantras and shlokas, and is designed to be used for chanting; and then there's the big Thousand Names of the Divine Mother book with commentary... Guest guest
Om Amritesvaryai Namah, The Vedanta Society has a small book containing a commentary on the Thousand Names, the stotra form, and the long version where each name is accompanied by a brief (one line) translation of the Sanskrit. I personally found this to be very helpful while listening to the MA Center tape and learning to pronounce the names. Guest guest
Om Namah Shivaya Hi The BEST way for me to learn the LS was listening to it as a song- there is a very nice cassette by bombay sisters who sing it to tune- i actually learnt the LS from an aerlier tape sung by Sivananda Vijayalakshmi. Thses could be available online. I have a copy of the bombay sisters tape( which sucetas has been jealously eyeing :-) ) and Sucetas wull soon be copying it- he/I could make more copies and mail it to you as a seva if you would be interested. when you hear it as a song, the tune sticks in your mind and it is easier to memorise the names,. Then you can go on and learn it from the thousand names book- and eventually read the famous commentary on it written by Sri Bhaskararaya many hundreds of years ago. For more info on the Sahasranama, you could also check out www.ambaa.org , a very scholarly and strictly traditional web site devoted to the Divine Mother . BUT BEFORE you chant the sahasranama, i would suggest you take a copy of it, get it BLESSED BY AMMA, and then start chanting it. Usually you are supposed to chant the sahasranama only if you are initiated into Sri-Vidya . But , i guess, as Amma devotees, if we get HER blessings on it, we can take it as an initiation .- it worked for me- after getting my book blessed by Amma, i started chanting it better than before. Guest guest
om amritesvaryai namah i agree with bala...Amma blessed my LS book and wrote something in it for me (autographed by the Author! hee hee...), and i also began chanting it much better... i also agree that learning it first in song form will help immensely. the stotra, or song, version is the original one, an account of which is given in the second part of the Brahmanda Purana, the 320 shlokas of which were later divided up into the Thousand Names. by learning it in song form, you will 'feel' the inherent rhythm which isn't evident at first when you chant it in mantra form. this will help you pronounce the sanskrit better because the verses' meter will automatically impress upon your mind the proper accents and such. you'll see what i mean when you try this... if this is chanted with devotion and concentration every day, one almost doesn't have to do anything else...its the central part of my sadhana, personally... oh, and one last thing...there are two Bombay Sisters recordings, and bala has the earlier (pre 1995) version, which i think is the better one for learning...the one i have, on CD (haha bala...you may be jealously eyeing mine soon!) is a very beautiful, though slower and more classically sung version, and if its the only one you can find, it will still definitely teach you the LS. and yes, i would gladly join bala in helping record it for those that would like it. Guest guest
Om Namah Shivaya All, The group's enthusiasm about Sri Lalitha Sahasranama and desire for doing seva is indeed commendable. However, please be careful when making copies of tapes or CDs. Indian record companies may not care too much about piracy, but it would be better to keep such things on a one-to-one basis. Broadcasting on a forum like this may not be a great idea..maybe Im missing the point, but thought I'd say it anyway..we dont want to label xyz as the person who can get you dubbed copies of tapes! Guest guest
for what it's worth (Rs. 30 per cassette)... I have a version of the Sahasranama by Anuradha Paudwal. It's a two-cassette album on the "Bhaktimala" series. Got it at a music store somewhere in downtown Bombay - don't remember the name of the store, but it was as close as it gets to a Goody's or Sam the Record Man in India. Keval Mail Plus - Powerful. Guest guest
om amritesvaryai namah Amma says this of the importance of the worship of the Mother of the Universe and Lalita Sahasranama arcana at the present time: "In the present age, the instincts of the heart and the motherly instinct have been lost. Motherhood is the symbol of love, compassion and forebearance. Feminine qualities like compassion and love should become stronger in men and masculine qualities like steadiness and courage should grow in women. Rapid progress will then become possible in both worldly and spiritual life. The worship of the Divine mother is ideal for enhancing these good qualities. Worship (arcana) using Lalita Sahasranama is of the utmost value for the prosperity of the family and for peace in the world. There will never be shortage of food or clothing in the home where Lalita Sahasranama is chanted daily. In olden days, when giving Krsna or Visnu mantras to their disciples, gurus usually instructed them to do arcana with Lalita Sahasranama as well." and to add, from the introduction to the Thousand Names book by Br. Brahmamrita Chaitanya: Chanting the Sahasranama is a spiritual practice that strengthens devotion and can be followed by everyone, man or woman, young or old, at any time. It is desireable to set apart a fixed time for daily chanting or arcana. If that time is missed, it is important to maintain the daily observance by doing it as soon as possible afterwards. Although it is important to strive for clarity in pronunciation while chanting, it is not necessary to give up the arcana if one finds it hard to pronounce the names. God is one who understands our heart. Mother reminds us that the father knows that the baby is calling him and feels love for it whether it says 'ccha' or accha' (father). In the same way, devotion and concentration are more important than nyasa and other rituals or lamps, or incense. There is no need to interrupt the daily practice because of difficulty in obtaining materials of worship such as flowers or food offering. All such materials are only props for concentration or symbols of surrender. Purity of heart and one-pointedness of mind are most important. That is why Mother says that mental worship - manasa puja - is the most exalted form of worship. Even though many different benefits are indicated to accrue from the Sahasranama, it is best to do the worship just for obtaining love of God, wisdom and dispassion. Worship with no desire for results will actually bring an end to the struggles arising from prarabdha and result in all desireable benefits. The Mother of the Universe who is full of love for those who take refuge in Her will never forsake anyone coming to Her with unwavering devotion. What higher good fortune is there than being able to be the object of the kindness of the Mother whose heart is always melting with compassion and to enjoy the nectar of Her motherly love as an innocent child in Her lap? (both selections given here are from the intro to the book THE THOUSAND NAMES OF THE DIVINE MOTHER, W/COMMENTARY, which can be purchased from the MA Center.) I completely agree with this as well. As a side note, one of the tour staff once told me that Amma says the LS should be chanted in naamaavali form ("om <name in dative case> namah") during the morning and daytime hours, but should be chanted in stotram form after sunset. I don't know if this is true, but this reflects the way it is chanted in Amritapuri. Jai Maa --Aravind Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. Sign up now. http://mailplus.
