FELICITATED: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy honouring Vedic

scholar Pandita Malladi Chandrasekhara Sastry after he had rendered

HYDERABAD: Surpassing all hurdles, Jalayagnam will be successful in

bringing vast stretches under the plough. The monsoon will bring

bountiful rains but subject to prayers to the rain god Varuna and

cloud-seeding operations. All this will lead to bumper crops with

pulses dominating this time.

The new Telugu year, Vyaya, beginning Thursday, will bring in `subham'

(auspiciousness) `vaibhavam' (glory) and all-round development. If one

goes by the predictions as part of the traditional rendition of the

almanac by Malladi Chandrasekhara Sastry, at the State-sponsored Ugadi

celebrations, Andhra Pradesh will be "a land of plenty, all-inclusive,

a paradise of happiness devoid of any major problem."

Majority assured

Politically-speaking, he said that with the Congress ruling at the

Centre and in the State, Y.S. Rajasekha Reddy would continue as Chief

Minister. He would secure majority whenever required but would face

occasional pinpricks in getting Central clearances for irrigation

projects.

Trade and industry would be buoyant with people seeking to buy luxury

and entertainment goods. Referring to the budget, the scholar, who

completed the 25th year of almanac-reading for the Government,

forecast that increased amounts would be spent on health and welfare.

Turning to the Chief Minister and Finance Minister K. Rosaiah he said

one must not be afraid of `vyaya' (expenditure) or `prayasa' (hard

work) as these alone would fetch income.

Possible turmoil

The scholar, however, cautioned the Chief Minister about possible

turmoil over power and water supply. He ended the exercise with a

piece of advice to Dr. Reddy: "The moment you think you will be in

power permanently, your downfall will begin. Do not ignore villages.

Concentrate on dharma, which will protect everybody. Ensure daily

rituals in 32,000 poorly maintained temples."

Dr. Reddy felicitated Sastry along with a score of other scholars. He

referred to `bad predictions' made last year during such

almanac-reading at Telugu Desam party office and contrasted them with

what actually happened. "Anything started with good intention is bound

to give good results," he said.
