Ugadi celebrated with religious fervour

Hyderabad, March 30 (PTI): Ugadi, the Telugu new year, was celebrated

with religious fervour and pomp across Andhra Pradesh amidst scholars

chanting Vedic mantras and making predictions for the year from the

almanac.

Dressed in new clothes, people offered pujas at temples and started

the day tasting the traditional 'Ugadi Pachadi' (pickle made of six

ingredients) symbolising the ebb and flow in the coming year.

At the main function held at Ravindra Bharathi, Chief Minister Y S

Rajsekhar Reddy said his government would go ahead with its policies

to uplift weaker sections and farmers and make efforts to accord

"heritage status" to Telugu language.

Amidst vedic chants and recitation of the prospects in new year,

called 'Vyaya' (expenditure), the Chief Minister and his cabinet

collegaues, legislators and others felicitated scholars and artistes

for excelling in their fields.

Ugadi is celebrated a day after new moon in the first Telugu month of

'Chaitra' which heralds the advent of spring as Sun enters Aries, the

fist sign of zodiac, where it reaches an exalted position.

The festival was also celebrated at Telugu Desam Party office amidst

chanting of vedic hymns and almanac reading.
