They have found out the fact that the Vedas contain the irresistible and irrefutable ways and means (open to scientific evaluation) adopted by the great seers of India to promote the ideals and values of Universal welfare, Universal harmony, Universal Brotherhood and Universal Peace and to unite all humans as members of ONE-WORLD-FAMILY (Vasudhaiva Kutumbhakam). The Vedic methodology The Vedas contain not merely the visions and concepts but experimental methodology also. In specific terms, it may be said that this methodology deals with the performance of a variety of prescribed rites to achieve the desired goals. These rites (karmas) range from those related to householders’ daily routine rites to the rites performed by the leaders of society from time to time on a great scale. The latter type of rites is known as Ishtis, meaning sacrifices. Sacrifices, irrespective of their scope, thus constitute the very core of the Vedic lore and are to be treated as means to translate the concept of global peace, progress and lasting prosperity. The basic objective of all Ishtis or sacrifices is to understand all the essentials of creation, adopt all the essentials of living to lead a vibrant life and to keep intact all the essentials of balanced existence. Another objective is not to claim ownership of any item but to offer it back to the divine forces, which have gifted them for human use. The whole nature plays a role model in this regard. Should man stay behind? What do Ishtis (Yaga) confer? Ishtis, if performed, with the help of professionals (ritvijas) will help us in various ways, viz, (i) fulfillment of individual desires (ii) ridding the society of ills caused by natural and divine forces and also by human miscalculations and misadventures (iii) maintaining ecological balance for balanced existence of humans, plants, animals, and all other living species (iv) sharing the gains of Ishtis by all members of the society Place of Shroutha tradition in the Vedic lore The four Vedas, viz, Rig, Yajur, Sama, and the Atharva, convey four distinct aspects. The Rig Veda stands for knowledge; the Yajur Veda deals with action (karma) and its Vedic processes and procedures; the Sama Veda contains aspects like prayer (upasana), meditation, etc; the Atharva Veda deals with science. The Rig Veda helps us in organising Vedic Seminars and conferences on knowledge related issues. The Yajur Veda contains procedures to perform two types of rites, viz, the Smartha and the Shroutha. The former category of rites belongs to the general category. They are very common and are easily performed whereas the latter category of rites are difficult, complicated and require the guidance and assistance of experts like Agnihotris (priests) for, they are to be performed strictly according to the procedure mentioned in the Veda. Since the Veda is known as Shruthi (that which is revealed to and hence heard by the sees directly, with divinity as the source) the rites performed in accordance with the Shruthi are known as Shroutha karma. The other kind of the Vedic lore is called the Smruthi, i.e., that which is remembered at a later stage. The Smruthis depend upon the authority of the Shruthi. The Present Status During the days of Patanjali, there were about 1131 shakhas (branches) of Vedic lore. Presently we are having hardly nine shakhas. The rest have simply disappeared. Even these nine shakhas are becoming endangered. All out efforts are required to protect, preserve and practice them. The declaration by the UNESCO that the Vedic chanting & knowledge as a masterpiece of oral and intangible heritage and has announced initiatives to support its preservation. This constitutes a silver lining in the otherwise dark sky. It is against this backdrop Om Shantidhama has ventured to organize three Ishtis and this is the only way to keep the Shroutha tradition alive and making it serve the cause of mankind.
