Chidambaram's proposal to provide Rs.50 million for the promotion of "oral and intangible heritage of humanity". Chidambaram in his budget presented in parliament Tuesday, said that Kuttiyattam, Vedic chanting and Ramlila have been declared "Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity" by the UNESCO. He said he had made an initial provision of Rs.50 million to safeguard the oral tradition. Welcoming the proposal, Sadanam Balkrishnan of the International Centre for Kathakali said: "It's a good move to save the oral tradition." "Few years ago, the art form was on the verge of extinction but efforts from UNESCO and the government have helped it. And now the new allocation would help it further to survive and flourish," Sadanam told IANS. Navtej S. Johar, a yoga guru and promoter of Vedic chanting, said the initiative would help in getting the art form "some visibility". "It's a healthy sign for the oral tradition and we hope the provision in the budget would help in attracting people in a big way to this source of knowledge," Johar said.pkn/zmn/am (IANS http://news.webindia123.com/news/showdetails.asp? id=264319&n_date=20060301&cat=Business
