Foundation will promote yoga in a big way: Acharya Karmveer

Chennai, Feb. 16 (PTI): Acharya Karmveer, who recently broke away from

Swami Ramdev after over a decade-long association with him, today said

his proposed foundation would promote yoga in such a way that it

would not become a commodity.

"Yoga should not become a commodity to be sold in the market. It

should not become a business. Ancient Seer Pathanjali never was one

for making yoga a commodity," he told PTI here.

The Acharya is conducting a six-day yoga camp, which began here on

February 13.

Asked why he broke away from Swami Ramdev, he said "I have some

serious philosophical differences with Ramdev and hence, I quit." He

had actually resigned from the Swami's Divya Yoga Foundation, he

said.

On whether drug preparation at Swami Ramdev's Ayurvedic centre, over

which the CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Brinda Karat, had raised some

charges, had anything to do with his quitting, he said "we must

always tell the truth. If the medicine is not 'shudh' then it will

not help patients," but didn't elaborate.

Once his 'Maharishi Pathanjali Yoga Foundation,' coming up at

Lonavala in Mumbai, started functioning from April 6, "the tradition

of Ayurveda will be promoted in a big way. We are thinking of

supplying herbal seeds to households and also educate the people on

the qualities of these herbs," he said.

The Foundation proposed to conduct a 40-day "Kayakalpa" course

and "whatever activity we undertake, we want to do it free of cost so

that more people including the poor benefit. One of the proposals was

to organise a Modern Gurukul, where Vedic studies would be imparted

along with regular educational programmes."Students will get formal

education, but in a gurukula atmosphere. English, Hindi and Sanskrit

will be compulsorily taught in this gurukul", he said.
