Guest guest
US Senator Leahy Urges Coup in Nepal Leahy worried of looming disaster in Nepal Kantipur Report KATHMANDU, Feb 4 - US Senator Patrick Leahy has urged for "a far more creative and persuasive" leadership in Nepal and abroad to prevent a tragic situation from becoming a disaster. Speaking in the Senate on Wednesday, for the fourth time in a year since February 1, 2005, Leahy said such a role is needed in Nepal, including from the army, as well as from the US, India, China and others to prevent a looming disaster. "Since King Gyanendra dissolved the multi-party government, curtailed civil liberties and imprisoned political opponents last year," Leahy said, "he has ignored appeals of the US, India and UK, as well as the UN, to negotiate with the leaders of Nepal's political parties on a plan to restore democracy." Delivering the speech "A Lost Year For Democracy And Peace In Nepal", he also informed his fellow lawmakers that in the King's latest attempt to quell mounting public criticism of his failed policies, the palace announced a preemptive curfew and a ban on political demonstrations recently. "Since then, hundreds of pro-democracy citizens, including several political party leaders, have been imprisoned around the country." "But nearly a year after King Gyanendra justified his power grab as necessary to defeat the Maoists, they are stronger and peace is more elusive," he said while criticizing Maoist brutalities on the same wavelength. In his speech to the Senate in November, Leahy had asked the Royal Nepalese Army to side with the people. http://www.kantipuronline.com/kolnews.php?&nid=64564
