Guest guest
Maths phobia? Vedic science helps subtract fears and multiply confidence Hiral Dave Rajkot, Febraury 10: WHAT'S 2356789 X 99999999? Need a calculater? But a mixed class of various engineering faculties at the Atmiya Institute of Technology solved the question in less than a minute, without the help of any devices, with the help of sutras of Vedic mathematics. The answer, by the way, is 23569776432302. Around 5,000 students of computer science, electronics, instrumental and control and chemical engineering are now taking lessons in ancient maths to solve complicated equations, faster and most importantly with greater confidence. The wonderful science of the past is being used to solve the modern day equations. The students have been using calculators and computers for years. Despite hi-tech electronic devices on hand, most students still do not feel confident about solving complicated equations and even in the multiplication and division of more than two digits. Not only school-goers, but a large number of engineering students also experience maths-phobia to some extent. Run by the Yogi Divine Society, students of the Atmiya Institute of Technology now spend two hours in the morning in learning this Vedic science to strengthen and polish their mathematical skills. Simplifying the complicated methods of conventional maths for them is 32-year-old Venkatasubba Rao, who has been doing research on `How to Apply Vedic Mathematics on Text Book Problems'. This electrical engineer from Banglore is the chairman of Vivechana, a Vyasa University-recognized institute which offer courses in Vedic Mathematics to students, professionals and IITans.``Mathematics is the backbone for engineering. Along with modern technology if ancient methods will be taught, it will help to strengthen the base and polish the skills of students,'' said T V Swami of the Atmiya Institute of Technology. Vedic mathematics has now been included in many schools across the US and UK at the elementary stage. ``Our attempt is to give students the best of both kinds of maths,'' he added.``Conventional mathematics offers only one method to solve any problem, while Vedic mathematics offers different simplifications of the problem and verification methods to solve equations faster,'' said Rao, adding, ``Vedic mathematics is often touted as a `trick'. However, it is not a `trick' but science that can solve equations of any kind, including arithmetic, algebra, calculus and trigonometry.'' What the students like best about Vedic mathematics is the fact that it does not require them to remember all those multiplication tables. ``We mugged them up during schools, but we hardly remember up till the table of 12 to 15 by the time we grow up. Tables are the base of conventional methods. But Vedic maths methods are more about addition and subtraction, making it simpler to solve complex problems,'' said Hitesh Parmar, a student of computer science. http://cities.expressindia.com/fullstory.php?newsid=169293
