Solar sets provided to poor families in Taplejung

By Our Correspondent

TAPLEJUNG, Dec 18: Kaduri Agriculture Aid Association (KAAA) has

provided 526 poor families in the remote areas of Taplejung district

with a set each of solar panels that generate electricity.

Iman Singh Limbu, an engineer at KAAA said that the set were

distributed to the families that lived more than 18 miles from the

district headquarters, after they were identified with the help of

Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project.

Limbu said that KAAA had distributed 203 sets in the Lelep VDC, 88

sets in Yamfudin VDC, 225 sets in Tapethok VDC and 10 sets in

Olangchungola VDC. The delivery and setting up of the solar sets was

completed last week.

Kanchenjung Conservation Area Project had made available data of

economic condition classification forms that had divided the families

in the VDCs as very poor, poor and medium. The sets were given to

those families falling under the very poor and poor categories, Limbu

said.

He said that the solar sets were given to the people to rid them of

kerosene lamps and that the act has improved the living standard of

the people to some extent.

Angphuri Sherpa from Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project said that

the houses of the villagers who spent their nights in the dark

before, become bright even before nightfall.

Limbu mentioned that there were 442 households in the area that were

yet to receive solar sets from KAAA. He said that though the division

of households had begun last year, the project would end only after a

few months. He added that Rs. 15,780,000 had been spent on obtaining

and transporting the sets to Taplejung. The association delivers the

sets to the houses while the families who receive the sets have to

get the funds to set them up themselves.
