Ravana, burnt everywhere, but a god here

Strange are the myths in Hindu religion. While most people belonging

to the community prefer burning the effigy of Ravana as a mark

of `victory of good over evil', the ten-headed demon king is

worshipped as a son-in-law in Mandsaur town in West Madhya Pradesh.

Namdeo Vaishav Samaj people who worship him on Dussehara day believe

that Ravana's wife Mandodari belonged to Mandsaur and thus take a vow

before his statue and make offerings after fulfilment of their

desire.

This year a 35-foot high ten-headed Ravana statue in a sitting

posture has been installed on the banks of River Shivna on Sunday

amidst chants.

Sculpted by an artiste of Indore, the concrete statue costing Rs 2.50

lakhs has been installed at the same place where a 25-feet high lime

and brick statue of Ravana existed till 1982. It developed cracks due

to lightning and was ultimately destroyed.
