HEADING IN THE WRONG DIRECTION?

Maharishi says west-facing Capitol skews coherent minds

BY JAN MURPHY

Of The Patriot-News

Some people fault the internal politics at the Capitol for

Pennsylvania's problems.

Others blame the elected officials who work under the dome. Maharishi

Mahesh Yogi,

the father of Transcendental Meditation, blames the actual building.

It faces the wrong direction.

A government building with an entrance facing any direction but east

skews people's

thinking and is the cause of many governmental failures, the Maharishi

said.

Oops. The Capitol's main entrance faces west.

"People do not know that a greater part of the negative influences in

life comes

from the wrong layout of the buildings in which they live and work,"

the Maharishi

said.

He is a proponent of Vedic architecture, which is rooted in 5,000-year-old

traditions from India that call for buildings to be oriented toward

the rising sun

in the east.

Scientific research documents that the brain fires more coherently

when individuals

face east, he said.

House members face south. Senators face north.

"I think Maharishi just explained everything that's wrong in

Pennsylvania," said

Matthew Brouillette, president of the Harrisburg-based Commonwealth

Foundation, a

government reform group. "Summon the bulldozers."

In an international news conference urging the world press to examine

the layout of

all government buildings on Wednesday, the Maharishi said that the

unpopular pay

raise that state officials voted to give themselves on July 7 is not

the only

decision that can be blamed on the Capitol's westerly orientation.

"That building would not have allowed the government to be successful

for any year

of the past 99 years," he said.

"Absolutely abandon it quickly -- and then the government will thrive.

... Continue

in this old building, and you can continue to count the failures of

the government

every year."

End Quote

The President of the United States traditionally uses the south

entrance to the White House, an inauspicious direction.
