Synthesis of science and spirituality essential: PM

Thiruvananthapuram, Sept. 3 (PTI): Synthesis of science and

spirituality was essential for the well-being and harmony of human

society, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, said today.

"Science without concern for moral values can go astray," the Prime

Minister said after inaugurating the Golden Jubilee of the Vinoba

Niketan at Malayadi village, about 35 km from here.

While creation of wealth was essential for alleviation of poverty and

diseases afflicting the society, mere accumulation of wealth was not

sufficient for the social well-being. Wealth should be blended with

spiritual values to bring benefits for the society, he said.

Enormous potential of nuclear technology, bio-technology and genetic-

engineering should be used for human good, he said.

The Prime Minister said institutions like Vinoba Niketan could play

an important role for the welfare of the rural people and depressed

sections supplementing the measures taken by the government for their

benefit.

Singh also laid the foundation for the Vionba Viswa Vidya Peeth being

set up by Vinoba Niketan and promised the Centre would provide

support for the institution.

Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, presided.
