Happy Divali!

This morning on National Public Radio, they had a

well-produced interview with the Guru and devotees of

a temple in Brindavan, talking about Krishna and some

basic notions of Hindu theology.

Although well presented and very nice, it was typical

that know-nothing Westerners chose to play this piece

TODAY, November 1st, 2005, when it is the celebration

of Divali in all Hindu communities! But that would

entail familiarizing themselves with the Hindu

calendar, or actually KNOWING Hindus...

Imagine an Indian radio program about Easter, and

playing it on the air on December 25th, without any

mention anywhere on the station that day about the

celebration of Christmas.

I am embarrassed for the ignorance of my country and

people.

I caught the tail end of it; and was happy it was aired on Diwali- assumed they

had mentioned that it was Diwali!

Today, they are having a Chinmaya Mission Acharya Invited to the White House for

Divali Celebrations. He is Acharya Gaurang Nanavaty, the acharya of Chinmaya

Mission Houston. Gaurang-ji has been requested to lead the invocation and give

a five-minute talk.

I think every step in the right direction is to be lauded; even if it does seem

late in the day. So- pl don't be so harsh on the country! Let me tell you that

within Indians, we feel that we too should be doing more to involve people in

our celebrations.

Whenever I've called friends here for Diwali, they have appreciated it; as

Indians sometimes hesitate to call their non-Indian friends to the

celebrations. Here in Miami, they are from all over the world, and it is such a

wonderful experience: dressing up, eating festive food, dancing the dandiya

raas.... and lighting all over the house.

Have to say though that this year it'll be quieter thanks to the bomb blasts in

Delhi that are saddening; and Wilma destruction here in MIami.

In loving light

Meenakshi
