Guest guest
Two traveling angels stopped to spend the night in the home of a wealthy family. The family was rude and refused to let the angels stay in the mansion's guest room. Instead the angels were given a small space in the cold basement. As they made their bed on the hard floor, the older angel saw a hole in the wall and repaired it. When the younger angel asked why, the older angel replied, "Things aren't always what they seem." The next night the pair came to rest at the house of a very poor, but very hospitable farmer and his wife. After sharing what little food they had the couple let the angels sleep in their bed where they could have a good night's rest. When the sun came up the next morning the angels found the farmer and his wife in tears. Their only cow, whose milk had been their sole income, lay dead in the field. The younger angel was infuriated and asked the older angel how could you have let this happen? The first man had everything, yet you helped him, she accused. The second family had little but was willing to share everything, and you let the cow die. "Things aren't always what they seem," the older angel replied."When we stayed in the basement of the mansion, I noticed there was gold stored in that hole in the wall. Since the owner was so obsessed with greed and unwilling to share his good fortune, I sealed the wall so he wouldn't find it.Then last night as we slept in the farmers bed, the angel of death came for his wife. I gave him the cow instead. Things aren't always what they seem." Sometimes that is exactly what happens when things don't turn out the way they should. If you have faith, you just need to trust that every outcome is always to your advantage. You might not know it until some time later... Yours George Pillai New and Improved Mail - 1GB free storage! Guest guest
I've heard this story before, and enjoyed it. But in the versions I've heard, the two "travelling angels" are always portrayed as male. Your version has the younger of the angels referred to as "she." There are differences of opinion over whether angels have genders. If the younger angel was female, what gender was the older angel? In most cultures that believe in angels, two women travelling together would seem very unusual. And patriarchal prohibitions would cause most people to give separate sleeping quarters to an older man and his younger female companion. Gets complicated, doesn't it? Because I always want to fix things, I want to somehow have the destitute farmer and his wife find the hidden fortune in the rich family's basement... I know "people of the Book" (i.e., Jews, Christians, and Moslems) talk about angels. How about Hindus? The beings called Gandharvas LOOK similar to angels -- they are winged (usually male) strangers who play musical instruments in heaven, sing beautifully, and cast flower petals down onto successful heroes and deities. A Gandharva called Pushpadanta is reputed to have written the Shiva Mahimna Stotram, praising Lord Shiva. But Gandharvas are NOT Biblical-style angels! Perhaps we could "Hindu-ize" the story if we began it: Lord Ganesha and his faithful Rat disguised themselves as an old merchant and his servant, and stopped to spend the night in the home of a wealthy family... -- Len/ Kalipadma --- pillai george <pillai_george wrote: > > Two traveling angels stopped to spend the night in > the home of a wealthy family. > > The family was rude and refused to let the angels > stay in the mansion's guest room. Guest guest
I GOT the facts, George! I said I'd heard the story before. YOU were the one who seems to have added irrelevant gender, culture, race, etc. to the story. There is an English expression, "the devil is in the details." This applies even when the subject is angels. :-) You're welcome. -- Len/ Kalipadma --- pillai george <pillai_george wrote: > TRY to GET the facts from the story, NOT to the > angels gender, culture, race, religion or when and > where they come from. > Thank you for your comments. > > George Pillai > > > james richard <nhraddude71 wrote: > From what i know about catholosism angels dont have > a sex. Guest guest
Devan means male angel. Devathai means female angel. It's said that Indran is the king of them all. In a story of Visvamithra Maharishi (Founder of Gayathri Mantras) two female angels came from Indra loga to seduce him instructed by Indran himself. Hence one of the angel managed to seduce Visvamithra Maharishi. Married him and even had a daughter. In South india they have a small temple for Visvamithra Maharishi.( Tanjore Dictrict) Apart from the above. Villagers in india still pray to many devathai's in the form of demigods. It's a yearly affair. They can be male or female and have temples for them too. Sorry to say that the devathai and devan here don't shower flowers on anyone, have wings or blow horns. They are some serious staffs. Hope i'v explained enough. Yours George Pillai Len Rosenberg <kalipadma108 > wrote: I GOT the facts, George! I said I'd heard the storybefore.
