Rudrakshas in daily life

I always wear a bracelet of rudraksha beads given to

me by a dear friend. When I worked at the polls last

Primary Day, one of my co-workers was very curious

about my bracelet. "What are those beads you are

wearing?" she asked in a heavy Russian accent.

"They're rudraksha beads. From India."

She squeezed her eyes almost closed and continued,

"But WHY are you wearing them?"

"They were a gift. They remind me of my friend."

She shook her head. "No, no, no. They DO something,

don't they?"

I grinned. "Well, some people say they reduce high

blood pressure, and bring the blessings of the god

Shiva..."

And she rolled her eyes as if saying "What kind of

craziness does this character believe in?"

Then I asked, "Would you like to buy one?" And she

left me alone about the rudrakshas!

People often figure that unusual jewelry "does"

something. Compare James' story about co-workers

thinking his rudrakshas were some sort of voodoo.

If I had told the Russian lady, "These beads curse all

my enemies, improve my sex life, and give me

unmatchable super-powers," she might have wanted to

buy a bracelet herself! But lowering blood pressure?

Getting the blessings of God (and a Hindu God, at

that!)? PIFFLE!

I use my rudrax mala for all the members of Shiva's

family -- Himself, Ganesh, Durga, and sometimes

Skanda.
