by. Im just curious, I know what i would smoke from a chillim but what do

It is usually said that Baba's few possessions included a chillim and

a pipe and that he enjoyed tobacco.

Namaste James,

Sorry I didn't respond to yr previous message but shall get round to

it, eventually, i.e. when the marbles are clearer in me stooopid

head..

Meanwhile, cannot help but chip in with a coupla dimes' worth:

----------------------------

Sai Baba of Shirdi indeed smoked tobacco according to many sources

and references but....... what's there to say he could not have mixed

tobacco with something else offered to him by devotees and others

whom he helped? Some things are never written down of course.......

Saints, High Adept Yogis and Sadhus are known to smoke chillums

filled with stuff such as dried snake venom, hash, opium, poisonous

herbs, etc. But due to their highly evolved spiritual abilities,

their bodies were able to turn poisonous substances into remedies

instead. In some cases, it is like: "We drink the drink; but we do

not let the drink, drink us". Its also kinda like "Inner Alchemy"..

when they use poison to counteract poison; i.e. after having absolved

a devotee's karmas for example.

Sai Baba of Shirdi is also referred to as a Lord Shiva Incarnate to

some Shivaites. Like Sri Sri Ramakrishna who also embraced Islam,

Christianity, Buddhism, etc. etc., H.H. Sai Baba of Shirdi did not

see "Duality". Neither did Sri Ramakrishna. For them, God/Goddess

is One and the Same, only with different names and in different

forms. Its like Shiva is also Shakti; both are One and the Same; Non-

duality.

My lil pea brain ain't too good these days.. Am finding it hard to

rack it for appropriate expression of what I'm trying to say but

words fail me but hope you get the drift nevertheless. Perhaps Sri

Neilji --- (if he has time) -- can elaborate further?? (Neilji often

knows exactly what I mean even when I was using the wrong words. He

reads my mind better than I can do myself :))

In India, Fakirs who are Moslems also sometimes use Hindu mantras

combined with Arabic variations. The same in Singapore and Malaysia

where Muslims live in perfect harmony with fellow countryfolk of

different religious backgrounds. Their respective "Medicine Men and

Women" are usually called "Bomohs" but there are other terms for it

too.

In Singapore, on Bencoolen Street (pretty sure its the correct

street), there are 2 temples. One is Hindu, the other is Buddhist.

Buddhists would light incence outside the Hindu temple when they pass

by. Hindus who walk past the Buddhist temple would do the same. I

saw this with my own eyes 2 years ago :)

Both temples have large censers outside the entrances. The Hindu

temple didn't open for prayers until 5pm but the Buddhist temple was

open all day. Can't remember the names of both temples right now

though..... But I am quite sure the Hindu one is Shri Krishna Temple

guarded at the entrance by a huge Lord Hanuman on one side and large

Lord Garuda on the other side.

Anyone from Singapore here? Maybe you can tell more or correct me?

And no, have never heard of anyone being killed in the name of Lord

Ganesha :))

also a Yogi who meditated . To me Islam and Hindu seem like night and

day. Do I have my facts straight or did one of those sites give me

some faulty information? Thats one of those hangups i got to get

over. Being an American living within an hour of NYC Im not to fond

of Islam at the moment. When I think of Islam I think of people that

would like to see my head on a stick. I also think of the rathful

jelious God of the old testament. I just dont see how he could speak

of Allah but be the rencarnation of Ganesha. Has anyone ever been

killed in the name of Ganesh?

Namaste Simoneji and friends,

Apologies for the delay, have been a bit below par this last week.

>Sai Baba of Shirdi is also referred to as a Lord Shiva Incarnate to

I personally feel it is sign of wisdom when one can find the truths that

one has learnt through one's one path and see it within another. Several

notable saints of relatively recent times have did this publically,

perhaps none more noted than Shirdi Sai Baba and Ramakrishna. But it is

worth noting that Ramakrishna didn't practices other religions for what

could be considered an extended duration. Shirdi Sai Baba on the other

hand though basically lived in a Mosque and had just as many Moslem

devotees as he did Hindu when he was physically incarnated. Today it

would seem most are Hindu. Hindu-Moslem saints and holy figures seem to

have a relatively strong presence in India, Kabir was another who was a

mix of Hinduism and Islam. To a large extent Sikhism is a sound mix of

elements of both religions and traditions such as Kashmir Shaivism have

absorbed Sufi influences into their writings, particularly devotional

poetry found in writers such as Lal Ded and Utpaladevacharya.

However, I think I am rambling here! The point I wished to reiterate was

that to one who has samavesha (same-sightedness), it matters little what

religion or spiritual system they are following, for each being is

non-different from theirself, all they can find is their own being. To

them the world is a mirror in which they are wearing a million masks.

All they see is their own being (Shiva) behind the form (Shakti). Baba

Muktananda said "Shiva is neither Shaivite nor Vaishnava nor Buddhist.

He is your Self. Shiva is neither Hindu nor Moslem nor Christian. He is

the Self of all. Shiva is inner bliss. Shiva is boundless love." There

is a poem by Hafiz, which I very much enjoy, that speaks well of this

general point, of transcending religious boundaries through spiritual

illumination:

I have learned so much

>From God

That I can no longer

Call myself,

A Christian,

A Hindu,

A Muslim,

A Buddhist,

A Jew.

The Truth has shared so much

Of Itself with me

That I can no longer call myself

A man, a woman, an angel,

Or even a pure soul.

Love has befriended Hafiz so completely

It has turned to ash and freed me

Of every concept and image

My mind has ever known.

This last verse I suppouse would speak of the mental state of likes of

Shirdi Sai Baba and Sri Ramakrishna.

I hope this poem illustrates the point, and probably does so better than

I could. Non-duality is something that has not really been explored too

much within this group. It seems that the perception of Ganesh is often

that based upon the holy Puranas, which are generally dualistic by

nature. The perception of Ganesh I have noted within the group is more

often than not very dualistic. Hindu texts, if we can categorise them

neatly into division for simplicity, fall into three basic groups -

dualistic, dualistic-come-monisitic, and non-dualistic. That is not to

say that one is right and another is wrong, each has its place.

For those who have put up with this long windy post - thank you!

Om Shanti

Neil

P.S. Sri Neilji - who?! Simoneji, your humour is on par with your

kindness! You can tell when the display of respect has gone too far when

the honourifics add up to more letters than are in your name itself! LOL
