But the version I learned (from Maya Tiwari's book, "The Path of Practice") was slightly different... <karagre vasate lakshmi/ karamule sarasvati/ karamadhe tu govindah/ prabhate kara dharshanam/> I know that short "a" sometimes drops out in modern languages derived from Sanskrit. The significant change is placing Sarasvati at the wrist rather than at the palm. Let me translate for people unfamiliar with Sanskrit... (At my fingertips dwells Lakshmi/ at the hand's root (wrist), Sarasvati/ at the palm art thou, Govinda/ thus blessed, I look at my hands./) I like the idea of the Gods and Goddesses dwelling in various parts of our bodies. The Durga Kavacha similarly places Goddesses over various parts of the entire body. But what is the significance of these Deities at these parts of the hand? And why do Sarasvati and Govinda swap places in different versions? The fingertips are used to place things, to give things, so Lakshmi (the gift-giver, Goddess of Abundance) seems appropriate here. The palm is where one receives things, and the wrist gives strength and flexibility to the hand. I'm not sure which is more appropriate to Sarasvati (Goddess of Learning) or to Govinda/ Krishna (God of Love and Preservation). Did your Guru (or whoever taught you this) have any related information? Are there gestures or actions associated with the mantra? -- Len/ Kalipadma ______________ The best thing to hit the Internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! Surf the Web up to FIVE TIMES FASTER! I was taught a prayer by Narada Muni that mentions 12 names of Ganesh: Vakratunda, Ekadanta, Krishnapingaksha, Gajavaktra, Lambodhara, Vikata, Vighnaraja, Dhumravarna, Balachandra, Vinayaka, Ganapati, Gajanana. Is this the same thing? I chant the 12 names every morning as <om [name]-ya namah>. As I am very fond of Durga Ma, I also chant her 9 names before going outdoors, or when I need courage. They are: Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri, Siddhidatri. K.N. Rao, a Vedic astrologer, said I should chant the <shloka> to Ganesh that begins "Vakratunda mahakaya surya koti samaprabham..." as many times a day as possible. navedaham
Len, The sloka (as we call it) is a very powerful one. In India, the hindu belief if that in our hands dwell Lakshmi, Saraswati and Govinda. So waking up wo see them first gives us knowledge, prosperity and protection. I heard about your hands. You just need to do this - believe me it will work. I will pray for your well being. And in 15 days, your arthritis will disappear. When you go to bed every night, say this to yourself by seeing your hands "Dear All Powerful, Thank You for giving me a great pair of hands. I can see it becoming better every day. Tomorrow it will be better. and when you wake up in the morning say Thank You God. You have made me feel your powers. My hands have become better. and then recite the Sloka. The carry on with your work. Just do some simple plam exercises after that. Do NOT strain yourselves. All the best and God Helps.
