Guest guest
om gam ganapataye namaha I was wondering if any members of the group followed fasting or other obligations on the twice monthly Chaturti and if so, what do they do? What regular devotional practices or vrats do other members follow? Henry
Guest guest
Namaste Henry, Since I don't observe the twice monthly chaturti, I wouldn't be able to offer info or suggestions. Everyone here have different practices, depending on their background, family deity, tradition (there are 10 classical schools in India), family guru, personal guru or gurus and various other reasons such as work schedules, family commitments, etc. etc. For my part, I'm humbly "free-will" inclined. My *current* devotions are to Ganesha, Durga and Hanuman due to certain planetary requirements. Like trying to recover from a big bad cold for one. How about yourself Henry. What sort of devotions do you practice when you are able to? Would love to hear of your experiences so please don't be shy about sharing. We are all here to learn from one another. All are students and all are teachers too. Guest guest
Sy and all, I am less consistent in my practice than I would like to be and have considered setting a pledge or vrat to begin this Ganesh Chaturti for some period of time. I offer incense and ghee lamp many but not all days. I do a puja once in a long while. I do japa from time to time during the day. I listen to Ganesh CD"s which I have. I try to go to the Flushing temple at least once every two months, but I've not been able to do that because of other obligations. I was considering a vrat to: 1. Fast with fruit and yogurt on the Vinayak Chaturti (every fifteen days) 2. Do a puja once a week at least. 3. Do at least two mala for Ganesh Mantra daily. I was wondering about the observation of others. I first heard of Ganesh in 1968 when an Indian friend referred to me as Ganapati because I have a pot belly. (Lamodarya) My wife who is a Quaker, not a Hindu, made me a T-shirt with a picture of Ganesh on it and the words "I have the Body of a god .... Ganesh" On my small alter I alsoin addition to Ganapati, have images of Haidakhan Babaji, Christ, Laxmi, and Siva. I receive and often read daily emails from Sivananda group, Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami, and others. I get the weekly lessons by mail from the Self Realization fellowship, but they don't exactly seem to suit me. Sometimes I feel that I read more than I worship, which I don't really feel is good. I had a dream years ago of being a Ganesh Pujari in a temple. I'd always wanted to build a Ganesh temple. Now I understand that the place to build it is in my heart, but I am a bit slow in the construction process. Guest guest
I need some help-can someone please clear this up for me. I have a Hindu calendar that I have from the temple in Flushing and it says that the ceremony days for Ganesh is August 22-31st, with the main day being on the 30th. But then i read in a book that the clay idol is put into the water 10 days after the 30th? My question is for that 10 days till the idol is put into the water, do we celebrate also? Wouldn't that make the celebration 20 days long? Please someone straighten me out, thank you Keri There is nothing more pure than the love of an animal.
