Guest guest
Jai Guru Datta I have already explained this matter, how people say Jai Guru Datta and tried to explain that I agree with whatever way they say. Be that Jai or Jaya Or Jaaiiiiiiiii..so and so forth. But I understand the thought behind this question, and that is how I operate.I first try to understand the thought, not the words. I gather that, since this "Jai Guru datta" saying of this wonderful sentence, meaning "Victory to Thee"(Am I quoting Tagore? :-) ) Victory to Lord Datta. I dont know whether we have a word in Sanskrit that is "Jai".,But again when tranliterating in English, people use different letters.I should know about this transliterating and the so many shortcomings of trying to type in English, the various words in other languages, having worked for the Voters ID card project of India Pronounciation...that is what it takes, and here we have typos and all other basic problems. Well, that could be one of the reasons,I chose to go for the ...writer's "thoughts",rather than what I see on my TFT,(Or the old "moniter") (Here some great thought has crossed my mind.Great by MY standards) I shall use "smaller i " when I should use the Caps. "I" shall be "i" hereafter. The guy who made it as a rule, that when we say first person singular,it has to be I,Caps big,he must be a vedaanthic fellow.Unintentionaly he refers to the Atma, that is I.First create the negative thought, then create the confusion, then go in for the Positive answer.Wow,thats kicking real nice. Ok,coming to JaiGuru Datta. Lots and lots of Datta devotees(Swamiji's children) write Jaya Guru Datta, why , our dearest Vamshi says that. When he says something, that is final for me,because recently,I could "realize" his prowess of teaching. One of his first class(A+) students (the kid came first in the Vedic Exams in Mysore recently),gave the final nod to one of my childish works, again a sadguru seva,in transliterating certain Sanscrit slogans. (See,not sanskrit, but sanscrit,I made a typo, but why?) Vamshi says,Jaya Guru Datta, and even writes the same. But i continue to say and write Jai Guru Datta. To Swamiji i say that, and i could sense that He approves it.it is the way i say that,or think that.Normally Swamiji corrects me on things like these,in His own special way,if i have to be corrected. What about this time? Defenitley..Yes. When I say Jai Guru Datta,I think I am pronouncing, all the Bheejaaksharaas right. When Vamshi says Jaya Guru Datta,i think he must be doing it even better,or it could be right on both accounts. i gather this is again one of the so many lessons,chances..that our Master gives.to ponder and wonder, what is right. So far I take what is right for me,and discard the water.(This morning,I was reading the lines, where Swamiji says about the three kinds of "Hamsa",the very first lines I read after opening the eyes for the day.) To me,Vamshi is the authority in pronounciations .And he is my Guru in lot of things. Personally I am happy with the way I say it.Jai Guru Datta.and i feel,i am not missing out anything.Any of the benefits of Bheejaaksharaas embedded in saying that. But i too would go for jayagurudatta,if an authority like Vamshi says so. Or otherwise. Lets hope Vamshi sees this email and respond. P.S: Once at Mysore, Vamshi was browsing over the comp, some sanscrit slogans, and since i was also in the process of transliterating some other slogan at that very moment, i asked him some doubts.but i didn't know what mood, he was in ...he told me politely,to look for some 'Sanskrit Scholor" to clear any of my doubts pertaining to that job. Here openly i say this,to Vamshiji,"Oh! Vamshi,I could understand your mood at that time, and i along with so many others nearer to you in heart feel that, but it is all for the benefits of people like me.you are there, for poor beggars like me.May be I am the only guy, wishing to be called as poor beggar here and i am sorry to pull along the like minded people into that poor beggar category,:-)) but still i am a poor beggar.A beggar of Jnaanaa, and ofcourse a beggar of all the material luxuries, mainly money.Dollars,Dollars,Oh! there is no satisfaction.I always think of puttingmore zeroes after the One. Actually I am the One,within the zeroes.why I am not "realizing " it? YOU are The Sanskrit scholor to me and like minded people, and we all look forward to your verdict. Or can i say,"I look for your kind suggestion,Vamshiji?" Jai Guru Datta, till then. Mail Bring photos to life! New PhotoMail makes sharing a breeze. Guest guest
Jaya Guru Datta It is Jaya and not Jai. According to grammer...the consonents(words ending with it) will be mixed with the vowels to form a complete letter/word. hence JaI (consonent) is be mixed with A (vowel) to form a complete letter/word: (jaI+A)JAYA which will be pronounced completely as JA YA Jaya Guru Datta

Guest guest
I was always under the impression that Jai Guru Datta and Jaya Guru Datta were from two different languages. Which languages? I suspect that it's two out of these four: Sanskrit, Kannada, Hindi or Telegu. I don't have a clue as to which. There are many bhajans that contain the word JAI. And it's obvious to me that Jai Guru Datta is correct in some language, otherwise this list would be called the jayagurudatta list. Guest guest
Many of the Hindi words taken from Sankrit end with short vowel, like Sundara becomes Sunder, Rama is Ram etc, hence Jaya becomes Jai.
