Guest guest
Dear Datta Devotees : On 22nd Sept... in the list Server mail <JAIGURUDATTA > a mail came to all of us from " dattadevotees " Subject : " Qualities of True Guru " I have taken parts of it & compared it to our own Guru !! Thanks much for your em on " Qualities of True Guru " thank you Hanuman... to have opened up this wonderfull topic... This em is from Prakash at the Sri Datta Venkateshwara Temple at the Ashrama -Mysore. By our Sadguru deva's grace... my wife Gayathri & I have had the privilege of being here & serving, fortunately have a chance to do three sevas at the same time !! 1) Lord Sri Datta Venkateshwara, 2) Sadguru Sri Swamiji & 3) Narayana Seva to the The local people of Mysore & other Devotees of Ashrama & City. We have been at the ashram since 1997, & we see our own spiritual progress taking shape day by day ... year by year. I would like to share with you... our dear Datta devotees... our experience of our " Dear dear True Guru ... " I will take parts of above mail & elobarate it in comparision about our own Dear Sadguru : > Guru Ð The Remover of Ignorance >The dispeller of ignorance is called Guru. In this two-lettered word, "gu" >stands for darkness, and "ru" means, the remover of darkness. It is the >ignorance of one's own self that causes all misery and suffering. >This ignorance can be removed only by a person who himself has known or >realized the Self. What is this 'Ignorance ' we talk about ... If we understand this : " The fact that The Allmighty is Permanent & everything ( repeat EVERYTHING ) else is temporary " In the depth of this statement alone We can understand the extent of our Ignorance. We think that the Stars are Permanent ... No ! at the time of Pralaya even that will go away .... ! so what to say of our car ... house ... & so on ... What the Guru teaches us is the sense of detachment we have to acquire towards all the materialistic things. As Sri Swamiji has told us so many times our own mind is the one which creates all the problems we face in our life ... On many occations He has chided us for some wrong doing ... we take that as a blessing & try to correct ourself. He tells us that those mistakes are due to our own Ignorance & corrects us ... Sri Swamiji puts in certain situations together ( which the common man might call it coincidence ) by which we learn so many things ... I will narrate one such incedence : One evening, at about 8:00pm .. it was time for the Final Arathi of the Lord, & the Screen in front of the Lord was drawn shut. I was in the Pooja Counter of Sri Datta Venkateshwara Temple, when I happened to see a non Datta Devotee carry a book. I was not able to see its heading ..A longing came up to my mind to see the book ... I then did something which I very rarely do ...because of my leg problem ... I went round to the front to request him to show me the Book ... My memory fails me to recollect the name of the book or its author ... but the very 1st chapter started thus : " Can you see God ... ? .... Yes, you can see God, provided you are able to clear up the dirty muk you have accumalated on the screen in front of your eyes. That screen is made of Glass & it is your Mind .... Just make it transparent & you can see God " Just as I was pondering over what I had just read & musing on it .. I looked up at the closed screen ...! Can I see the Lord's Murthy... ? Then & there it opened & Lo ... in all HIS Splender & Glamour was Sri Datta Venkateshwara ... the Lord of Lords... ! The " Alankara Preyaha " was all decked up & standing as a mute witness to all what is happening around Him ... ! How very symbolic it was for me ... for what I had just read & what I saw. Immediately ... I could see Sri Swamiji's hand in this ... This happened almost four years ago ... Since then .. I have been trying to use ... all kinds of cleaning materials to wipe my mind clean .. But wow .. ! that has been one H of a tough job... ! Everytime an unacceptable thought comes to the mind ... Beekay is ready with a mop in the hand... ! For the past few months... I have been thinking ... How do I gain more spirituality being here at His feet..... ? For one thing... I have been trying to put all what He is teaching us into action. Secondly, Having satsanga whenever possible... This is how My guru is driving away my Ignorance and showing me the way to salvation. In my opinion ...Our Appaji ... our Guru works with us on a one on one basis. .... His very glance at you is enough. How does that work one may ask ... Unfortunately ... our Human race has not yet found out instruments to measure or confirm to our so called scientific mind .. that... Look this is how it is ... On This note .. I would like to say Sri Guru Datta ... On the next aspect it will in another em ... ! Prakash JAIGURUDATTA [JAIGURUDATTA] On Behalf Of dattadevotees Thursday, September 22, 2005 11:49 PM JAIGURUDATTA Qualities of True Guru Jaya Guru Datta http://www.sadguruseva.org/sss/sssMain.html Guru Ð The Remover of Ignorance The dispeller of ignorance is called Guru. In this two-lettered word, ÔguÕ stands for darkness, and ÕruÕ means, the remover of darkness. It is the ignorance of oneÕs own self that causes all misery and suffering. This ignorance can be removed only by a person who himself has known or realized the Self. According to Sri Vedanta Desika, the chief characteristics of a Guru are: He must be Siddha (Perfect), and have complete knowledge of the parampara (tradition); well-versed in scriptures (shaastras), firmly rooted in Brahman (the Supreme Self); truthful and saatvik (Godly and pure); should have unblemished conduct, and be free from vanity and jealousy; a master of the sense-organs and a dependable friend; compassionate and ready to punish a student, when he goes astray, and dedicated to the spiritual welfare of himself and others. Those, sincerely desirous of obtaining the knowledge of the ÔSelfÓ and the consequent liberation from samsaara (worldy bondage) i.e, the cycle of births and deaths, should aspire for and approach such a ÔGuruÕ.
