Lord Dattatreya is pictured as being surrounded by 4

dogs, representing the 4 vedas, and a cow,

representing mother earth or dharma, as his constant

companions. He travels everywhere, yet his favorite

abode is under the shade of the Audumbara tree.

Some interesting observations: Sri Swamiji travels the

globe with his parivaram, consisting of his musical

troupe (parivaram) and kusumakka (who handles

Swamiji's bhiksha). He travels everywhere and accepts

many faiths and philosophical systems under his wing,

yet his favorite is the teaching of jnanam (and

day-to-day lessons) through Silence. Audumbara

(according to vasthu sastra) is to be placed on the

south side. Guru Dakshinamurthy is said to be

south-facing. He taught his disciples knowledge of the

Self through the expression of the Jnana Mudra in

absolute Silence. Though Swamiji teaches through many

methods, his favorite method of teaching is through

Silence, i.e., heart-to-heart. Like the audumbara tree

with many leaves, but its root is fundamentally

situated on the southern side (Silence), indicating

that all paths (branches) lead to the same root

(Silence).

Do not be small-minded. Plant the Audumbara tree

within your heart, and draw your own conclusions.

Jai Guru Datta!
