[sacredLifeOfSwamiji] Life History of H.H. Sri Swamiji 189

The singing of the keertanas by Swamiji on Sundays

impressed Bhagawat, a musician with a melodious voice.

He was a keen listener of those sankeertanas and he

found some faults in the technique used by Swamiji.

Despite the defect, he found that the exploration of

the range of movements in each raga by Swamiji brought

a sense of beauty to the ears of the listeners.

“It would be nice if you can carry on preaching the

subject matter on “The Truthâ€.†Bhagawat told Swamiji

as he became more close associate of Swamiji.

Request like this from an experienced person was

enough for Swamiji to take it seriously.

The usage of the “Bijaksharas†and also the blessings

from the deities of the ragas were of great assistance

to many devotees. They found that they received a

number of benefits from listening to the keertanas

from Swamiji. The melodious music was even getting

the hard hearts of quiet a few devotees turn softer.

It increased the flow of good thoughts in the

listeners.

Swamiji was noticing that the world was full of events

of some sort or other that brought in doubts and pains

to a number of people. It is human nature that men

give free advice to people in suffering without being

asked to do so. Many of those advices turn out to be

useless and in some situations harmful as well. The

hearts of the people hardened by troubles in life

would not get softer by listening to the intellectual,

spiritual talk. In some situations such talk would

lead to unnecessary illogical arguments. Hence

Swamiji evolved a technique of mixing such advice with

the music.

This method when observed superficially would appear

similar to Harikthas. It was not really true.

There were a number of differences between the two.

In the Harikathas, based on the story, there will be

some analysis of the subject matter and some in the

form of keertanas. The analysis and the keertanas

depend upon each other.

On the other hand if one could separate the preaching

part from the singing part in the method used by

Swamiji, one could find out that each of the two would

be a separate entity on the own. But, the mixing of

the two would be a separate entity on its own. But,

the mixing of the two had a special feeling of the

completeness and also had special benefit. So, it

was not possible to call it as Harikatha and also not

possible to call it as only Sankeertana. One could

not call it as discourse either. This is Swamiji’s

special discourse, Swamiji’s special Sankeertana and

it had his stamp on it. It was not easy for others

to copy his method.

Gradually Swamiji introduced in his discourses,

keertanas from famous singers of the past in all

different languages. It is a wonder as to who could

have taught Swamiji so many languages and so many

different keertanas. Only Swamiji would know the

answer for it.

The kitchen adjoining the platform for the poojas was

given the name “Annapoorna Mandiramâ€. It had a

picture of mother Jayalakshmi on one of its pillars.

It was never moved from its place any time.

Jayamma started serving “Biksha†to Swamiji in the

kitchen. There were days when there would be enough

food grains in the kitchen, which would be help in

cooking for about 20 people, and Swamiji would send

request to prepare the food for 400 guests. On those

days Swamiji would go personally to serve the prepared

food to those 400 guests. He would serve them all

with enough food to satisfy and the amount prepared

would last for all the 400. It is one of the

miracles of Swamiji.

An exceptionally unusual event took place one night.

Swamiji came out of the room shouting, “Enough of this

lazy sleep. Do get up quickly. The sages Vasishta

and Vamadeva have come. Can’t you see? Get up

immediatelyâ€.

All the devotees who slept there that night were

surprised by this behaviour of Swamiji. Naganna,

Mayor of Bangalore was sleeping at the Chopparam that

night with his family got up with the other devotees

on hearing the words from Swamiji. Swamiji walked

briskly into the Annapoorna Mandiram. He picked up a

shovel lying nearby and walked a few years with it.

Other disciples followed him blindly into the

Mandiram. After moving around here and there, Swamii

started digging. A disciple came forward to pick

up the shovel from Swamiji and do the digging himself

but Swamiji did not let him do it. Another devotee

brought in a hurricane lamp to assist in the digging

in the dark.

It was not easy to dig especially in that area. That

area of Mysore was well known for stony hills.

Swamiji did not mind about the hard work and continued

digging. He saved the mud that was lifted out during

the digging. He collected the mud in a separate

gunny bag and made the devotees keep it in his

meditation room. He had special use for that mud at

a later date. He told his devotees that the soil he

had dug out was very precious; it had come from the

blessings of sages Vasishta and Vamadeva.
