remember, the Neti Neti method, the 'who am I' enquiry after the non-Self (so

that in the end only the Self remains), are but options. mental mantra japa

is also meditation as it also stills the mind. imagining the Guru in one's

heart is also meditation. it is possible to meditate on nature, on the vast sky

etc Guru guides everyone according to his/her vasanas from previous births.

There are mantras and other sadhanas which tend to make one very active, see

On the other hand, I found the mantra given below, OM, Shantih Shantih

Shantih to be the most calming one that I know. JGD

> “Worry is like Vishwamitra.†“Peace is like Vasishta.†Mother out of

> genuine compassion had converted him from Vishwamitra to Vasishta. This is the

> Peace, the unbroken Peace, and the Peace, which can never be disturbed. The

> earth is Peaceful, the Atmosphere is Peaceful, the Quarters are Peaceful and

the

> Subquarters are Peaceful. Peaceful all round. Om Shantih Shantih Shantih.

> The train carried him on to Mysore gently swinging and shaking all along(31).

“

> Great Soul, I am blessed. I realised my mistakes. I will correct them. I

> still do not know what the expiation is for my mistakes,†said the old yogi.

“

> Guru considers that it is a holy day when his disciple recognises his own

> mistakes. He does not wish for any expiation on his disciple. Your guru had

> commanded that you should go on a pilgrimage and let that be your expiation.

> Complete the pilgrimage and continue your sadhana. You will prosper. Good

sadhaka

> like you should spend his time on “Tapasâ€. The divine waves emanating from

> the power of the Tapas will assist in the Universal Welfare. Why do you think

> that 1000’s of Maharshis re conducting Tapas for eons in the Himalayas? They

> are not doing it for any personal benefits. If they went to achieve some

> powers they would have come down to earth and carried on the task of Universal

> Welfare. They are full of compassion to the life on earth and hence they have

> decided to stay in “Tapas†and bless the mankind. They are protecting our

“

> Mother Earth†and “Our Country†by their unselfish act. Please go and

> peacefully conduct your sadhana,†Swamiji instructed the old yogi. “Your

command. I

> have a small request.†“Say it.†“The little power inside me is going

to be

> harmful if it is with me. In return for the great service you have given to

> this little jivi, I would like to offer that little power I have inside, to

> you. Please do not refuse my request,†the yogi pleaded. Swamiji smiled and

> said, “I am happy to know about your good thoughts. It is laudable. But you

must

> give it to your own guru. It is like giving it to me only. Really speaking

> there is only one guru in the entire universe. Sree Guru Shiva Eva

Namah(32)â€.

> “That Shiva in these forms is reaching you. For a true sadhaka, who has the

> blessings of his guru, every little atom, opens its mouth and preaches. Every

> action in this world is guru for the sadhaka. You have to consider that your

> guru has transformed himself into every single atom in this world. The wise

> do not show any differences between the gurus.†“If you consider that the

> power inside you is dangerous, it is like going round a lake without getting

> down and having a bath. The sadhaka can see and experience everything in his

> sadhana. “Peace, Pride, Sorrow, Luxuries in life, Welcome, Insult, Disease

etc

> are to be experienced by the true sadhaka. Some problems do not appear as

> problems but feel good and put one under delusion. Sadhaka must overcome all

the

> obstacles, there is no room for complacency. If he slackens in his sadhana

> even a little, he cannot be considered as a sadhaka. He can reach the summit

> if he does not slacken in his attempts. He will become Vasishta. That is what

> I have learnt from my 12 years of sadhana. Offer your power and sadhana to

> your guru and proceed further. The success is in front of you. May the

> blessings of guru be with you always.â€

--------------------- Explanations: 31. It
