It is nature that does it all. LESSONS FROM BHAGAVAD GITA – 49 As taught by Parama Pujya Sri Swamiji “The Lord does not create the agency, or action, or the union of action and its fruits. It is nature that does it all.” The Self does not create agentship by saying ‘do this or do that.’ The idea is that the Self does not impel anyone to do any work. Nor does He create any action, which means, in this context, the objects of action such as cars, pots, buildings, etc. That means He does not generate the objects that are sought after. He also does not create any connection with the result of action-connection of the creator of an object with the result of his work. If the Self does not do anything himself and does not make others do, then who is it that engages in work by doing and making others do? The answer is given in the second line of this verse. The Lord says all these actions happen in keeping with one’s nature, characterized as Maya, or ignorance, and not due to the Self, which is actionless. The nature is constituted of the combination of Sattva, Rajas and Tamas (Purity, Activity, and Inertia.) By the power of this nature or Maya, man has attached himself to actions and thinks that he is working and he is the doer of actions. But all work belongs to the nature and not to the Self, which is the real man.
