Guest guest
Chapter 5 Verse 13 Sarva-karmaani manasaa sa.nnyasy'aaste sukham vashee / nava-dvaare pure dehee n'aiva kurvan na kaarayan // The embodied being, having renounced all work in the mind, and self-controlled, rests happily in the city of the nine gates, neither acting nor causing others to act. LESSONS FROM BHAGAVAD GITA – 49 As taught by Parama Pujya Sri Swamiji Compiled by: Swami Dattananda Bhakti Mala, January 1997 “The embodied being, having renounced all work in the mind, and self-controlled, rests happily in the city of the nine gates, neither acting nor causing others to act.” City of the nine gates - the two eyes, the two ears, the two nostrils, the mouth, the rectum and the urinary passage are the nine gates of the body, which resembles a city. Its Lord is the Atman (the Self). It is inhabited by its subservient citizens like mind, intellect and the objects of the senses, which are productive of many results and experiences. Renouncing all actions, the embodied being (the man of self-control) resides in that city in all happiness. The man who rests happily in the body is the man of self-control (Vasi). He is the man, who has realized the Self as different from the aggregate of the body, mind, intellect, etc. The body of the man of realization may work, but he is completely at rest because he knows that it is the mind and the senses that are working, and he, the Self, is just a witness. Thus he abandons all actions in the mind, although his body works according to its own nature. Thus the individual Self rests in Atma, who is the Lord of the body, unattached to anything taking place through the nine-gated city of the body. And to such a man, as there cannot be any direct or indirect agency or feeling of doership in the works of his body, it is said that he rests in the body (na eva kuran) without himself doing anything at all and (nakarayan) not inducing others like body and organs to activity.
