Guest guest
Chapter 4 Verse 26 Shrotraadeen'eendriyaaNy anye sa.nyam'aagnishhu juhvati / shabdaadeen vishhayaan anya indriy'aagnishhu juhvati// Some again offer hearing and other senses as sacrifice in the fire of sense-restraint, while others sacrifice the sense objects like sound, etc., in the fire of the senses. LESSONS FROM BHAGAVAD GITA – 39 As taught by Parama Pujya Sri Swamiji Compiled by: Swami Dattananda Bhakti Mala, February 1996 “Some again offer hearing and other senses as sacrifice in the fire of sense-restraint, while others sacrifice the sense objects like sound, etc., in the fire of the senses.” These are the metaphorical ways of expressing that the senses are to be controlled and the sense-control or restraint is the fire to which the powers of the senses are offered. God-realization is possible only by mind-control and this depends on sense restraint. Sense-restraint is the sacrifice mentioned in this verse. The seeker after God should first get his senses like eyes, ears, nose, tongue and skin under his control. He should not allow his senses to go wherever they like and get attached to their objects like form, sound, smell, taste, and touch. This is what is meant by sacrificing the senses like hearing, seeing, etc. in the fire of sense-restraint. In the second half of the verse, one is asked to sacrifice the sense-objects in the fire of the senses. An ordinary man is attracted by the sense-objects and gets attached to them. Attachments lead to entanglements and miseries. The happiness one derives from sense-objects is only momentary and in the end the same objects give him pain and misery. Knowing this truth, one has to totally reject the sense-objects. He should not think of them and allow his senses to run after them. This is what is meant by sacrifice of the sense-objects in the fire of the senses. Health - Feel better, live better http://health.
