Guest guest
Jaya Guru Datta, Here is today's saying: “A seashell seen from a distance in bright sunshine might be mistaken as silver. A rope may be mistaken for a snake in twilight. The desert travellers mistake a mirage for water. a dwarf tree might look like a hiding thief in darkness. Why does this happen? We do not know that the piece of shining object is seashell and therefore we impose silver on it. We do not know that it is a rope and therefore we impose snake on it. Similarly, we impose a thief on a dwarf tree. Because we are not able to comprehend the objects properly, we superimpose something else upon them. In reality, there is no actual relation whatsoever between a piece of seashell and silver. So is the case with rope & snake and mirage & water. Similarly, we impose the world upon Atma. In reality, Atma is pure and is totally independent of everything in the creation. In the examples cited above, we understood that ignorance is the cause for the superimposition. Even in the case of Atma, we superimpose the world because we do not know what the originant is. This is called Ajnaana (ignorance). The scriptures have used different terms in different contexts to denote this lack of knowledge. They are Avidya (non-knowledge), Tamas (darkness, gloom), Moha (delusion), Moola Prakriti (the original root out of which all apparent forms are evolved), Pradhana, (primary or unevolved or nature), Guna Saamya, Avyakta (the unevolved), Maya (illusion), Beeja Shakti (primary cause), etc., etc. Each term has a purpose. We will understand about them in the lessons that follow." Sri Swamiji, Lessons in Vedanta - 15 part III Sri Guru Datta, Swamiji Says _____ WIN a first class trip to Hawaii.
