The Better Offering

Jaya Guru Datta,

Here is today's saying:

“God is not concerned either with the quality or the quantity of the materials

offered to Him. What He is concerned with and sees most is the attitude or the

feeling with which the offerings are made. Whatever is offered to God should be

done with devotion and a pure mind.

Once, Sri Krishna came to the house of Vidura, the doyen (eldest or senior

member)among devotees. Vidura was not present in the house then. His wife

received the Lord with supreme devotion. Her joy knew no bounds. She forgot

herself in the joy she experienced. In the resultant confusion, she peeled

plantains, and throwing away the fruity part, fed Sri Krishna with the skin.

The Lord, to whom the devotees are very dear, went on eating the skin silently

and with much relish.

Vidura came home and was stunned on seeing what was going on. He warned his

wife, who then realized her error, and prayed to the Lord to forgive her.

Vidura then engaged himself in the Lord's service, and went on feeding Him with

plantain fruits.

Tasting the plantains put in His mouth by Vidura, the Lord remarked, "O Vidura,

the skins of plantains with which your wife fed me were sweeter than the fruits

you are now putting in My mouth, and they gave me more satisfaction.'

'Whosoever offers to Me with devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit, or even water,

that offered by the pure-minded with devotion, I accept.' (Bhagavad Gita,

Chapter 9, Verse 26)"
