dear bhAgavathAs,

That the Lord's grace is nirhEthuka (causeless) is told

and enjoyed in this thiruvAymozhi. Some AchAryAs say that

AzhvAr, in this thiruvAymozhi expresses the limitless

happiness that he gained due to the mingling of the Lord

with each of the AzhvAr's body parts, as expressed in

the previous thiruvAymozhi. Sri parASara bhattar provides

a special explanation of this thiruvAymozhi. It is as

follows.

In the preceding thiruvAymozhi, AzhvAr told that he

attained great happiness by the LOrd coming and residing

on AzhvAr's head - "enadhu uchchiyil uLAnE" &

"uchchiyuLLE niRkum dEvadEvaRku" are the words he uses.

Now, is there any other anubhavam that can be more

special and superior to that? The answer is no. The

only thing that is necessary is for that experience to

continue without any interruption, and that is the

grace of the LOrd only, and depends on His mind (thiruvuLLam).

AzhvAr inquired into the great gift he got

in the previous thiruvAymozhi and thought "The gift

we got is extremely big; There is no other gift that

is higher than this; How did we get this gift?". As he

inquired/thought about this, he realized that there is

no sAdhanAnushtAnam (act that he did to get the gift)

that is appropriate for the greatness of the gift. He

thought that even if there is something he had, then

it is only adhvEsham and Abhimukhyam that he had and

nothing else. Those two cannot be thought as sAdhanAs.

Given this, even if nammAzhvAr got paramabhakthi,

he did not have anything that could be termed as

sAdhana. Thinking these, nammAzhvAr concludes that

the blessing/gift of the Lord is nirhEthuka (causeless)

only.

svAmi vEdAnta dEsika, in dramidOpanishad tAtparya

ratnAvaLi, uses the word "avyAja udhAra bhAvaath" -

the act of giving without pretext! to describe this.

Let my head bow, and my mouth do mangaLAsaasanams

to nammAzhvAr, who solidly experienced and told us

about the guNa of the Lord who has the sankha and

chakra, who comes to this earth and without any

action/effort on the part of His devotees, gives

His anubhavam to them.

AzhvAr, who in the previous thiruvAymozhi sang about

the Lord's coming and mingling with all parts of

AzhvAr's body, inquired whether he had any

upAya that could have been the cause for the great

blessing he got; he realized that the nature of the

Lord is to provide special blessings (vishEsha

katAksham) without any sAdhana on the part of the

bhakta (nirhEthukamaaga), and sings about that

great quality of the Lord in the thiruvAymozhi -

porumaa neeL padai.
