Guest guest
Sri: Srimathe Ramanujaya Nama: Dear Sowbhagyavati Vaidehi, Lakshmana is said to have exhibited sEshatvam only and not pAratantryam, specifically because he chose to disobey the Lord's word - when asked to stay back in Ayodhya. Furthermore, he used the phrase "aham sarvam karishyAmi" - stating that "I will do every thing". This is not considered the state of a para- tantran. As adiyEn mentioned once before, our acharyas state that this is the reason why Rama chose to take Bharata as the example of brotherhood rather than Lakshmana - in Aranya Khanda. On the other hand, Bharata came over to simply pray for Rama's return to Ayodhya. He also brought Kaikaeyi along to prove that Rama did not have to continue on staying in the forest. However, when Rama declined, he accepted that and when asked that he rule Ayodhya, he simply obeyed it, in spite of the fact that it was against his nature to do so. Hence, he is the example for pAratantryam. adiyEn madhurakavi dAsan --- vaidhehi_nc <nappinnai_nc wrote: > > I don't understand how you made the statement > that > bharata for pArantantryam. Guest guest
Sri: Srimathe Ramanujaya Nama: Please find some notes from the vyAkhyAnams of Periyavacchan Pillai and Nampillai on the positions of Lakshmana & Bharatha. >From Swami Periyavacchan Pillai's vyAkhyAnam for Thiruppallandu: "rAmakrushNAdhirUpENa vandhavathariththu 'pitur vacana nirdEshAt bharadvAjasya shAsanAt' enRu, pithruvachana paripAlanAthigaLai AsariththaruLiyum, iLaiya perumALai iduviththu 'vaguththa vishayaththil sEshavruththiyE ivvAthmAvukku svarUpam' ennum idaththai prakAsippiththaruLiyum, 'rAjyancAhanca rAmasya' enRu koNdu indha vruththikkadiyAna pArathanthryaththai sri bharathAzhvAnaiyittu prakAsippiththaruLiyum, ippArathanthrya kAshtaiyai 'gacchatA mAtulakulam bharatEna -- nIta:' enRu koNdu sri shathrugnAzhvAnaiyittu prakAsippiththaruLiyum ..." That is, Sri Rama showed the common path of dharma which was obeying another person's word, such as those of his father, Bharadwaja, Sugreeva and others. Lakshmana exemplified the concept that growth in service to the Lord is the true nature of the soul. Sri Bharata exemplified the pAratantrya which is the base for this growth. The arumpadhavurai for the vyAkhyAnam states that the 'indha vruththi' means being like an acit object. Sri Shatrugna showed the height of this pAratantrya. >From Nampillai's vyAkhyAnam for Kanninun Siruththambu: "'oruvan solliRRu oruvan seyyak kadavan' engiRa dharmam nErAga azhindhu kidakkaiyAlE pithruvachana paripAlanAdhigaLAlE sAmAnya dharmaththai anushtiththAr perumAL. ... In explaining what Sri Bharathazhvan showed, the following details are given: 'raraksha dharmEna balEna' - Instead of only protecting (serving) You (like Sri Lakshmana - adiyEn's comment), I will protect (serve) Your kingdom as well. 'aham vElEva sAgaram' - The beach is present to serve the ocean; nevertheless the ocean cannot overcome the beach. Similarly, You are greater than me, but you cannot go beyond me. The arumpadhavurai states that the 'than sellAmai' is 'inbility to tolerate separation from Rama'. Notice the use of 'nirbanthiththu adimai' by both Nampillai and Periyavacchan Pillai for Lakshamana and the comparison that Bharata did not do that - instead accepting whatever the Lord wished. Periyavacchan Pillai adds that Bharata actually came back happy (prIthiyOdE) that he was doing what Rama wanted, even though it meant separation from the Lord.
