sO-ayam vikAsayathu sUtravathIpathirme

Meaning:

yathpANipadma - In whose lotus-like hands; dhrtha kAnchana vEtraavallee - very

slender golden-colored bamboo cane; spandha: - the motion; surEndhra bhaya

bhanjana lampata AthmA - which possesses the heart (mind) to drive away all

fears of Lord Indra; vaikuNTa sUri parishath prabhU - the leaders of the

NithyasUris of VaikuNTa; sUtravathI pathi:s: - who is also famously known as the

husband of sUtravathi; ayam - this sEnai mudaliAr (VishwakshEnar); athra - in

this (material) world; mE - upon me; Sarma - happiness; vikAsayathu - let Him

help blossom.

Commentary:

VishwakshEnar, just by his mere shaking of the bamboo cane in his hand, scares

away all the asurAs who threaten the deVas (demigods). That quality of

VishwakshEnar is mentioned here by Swami Desikan. In his thiruvaimozhi (3.3.2),

nammAzhwAr refers to the nithyasUris as "vAnavar" and VishwakshEnar as

"vAnavarkOn". The wife of VishwakshEnar is called sUtravathI.
