[sindhorg] Hindu Prayers in London Mosque

London Mosque hears Hindu prayers

12-08-2005

London, Hindu Council UK press release:

In what may be the first signs of real inter-faith healing, last week

a Hindu teacher was invited to recite Hindu prayers at a London

Mosque. Jay Dilip Lakhani of the Hindu Council UK, along with many

other faith representatives, was invited to the Al Khoi Shia Mosque

in London for a prayer meeting for the victims of the London

bombings.

Mr. Lakhani recited and translated Shanti-paths (peace invocations)

from the ancient Hindu scriptures, the Vedas. Although Hindu

teachings have been presented in the past from quite a few mainstream

church pulpits, this must be the first time where Hindu prayers are

recited and explained in a mainstream mosque. This can only happen in

London, the multicultural capital of the world, where people of

different faiths can and do live together peacefully together.

Government, academia, the media and the mainstream faith bodies are

frantically exploring various avenues to see if a resolution to this

thorny problem can be found. The issues raised by these events are

not going to go away that easily. Mr. Lakhani, who was interviewed on

ITV, commented that the resolution lies firmly in the pluralistic

teachings of Hinduism which encourage the development of spiritual

knowledge in whatever faith one belongs to.

Mr. Lakhani urged that these ideas have to be incorporated and

promoted within the framework of teaching of all the world religions.

He continues to promote this agenda to the DfES as well as the QCA

and the Religious Education Council of England and Wales.

"Some mainstream faith bodies are showing tremendous openness in

exploring the issue of how people of different religions can co-

exist", he said.
