Sri Krishna Janamasthami is celebrated in a grand manner to cherish

the good deeds of Lord Krishna and to pray for a happy and prosperous

life.

Lord Krishna, born of Basudev and Devaki when they were held

prisoners by the evil Kansha in Mathura, India guided humanity on the

path of knowledge, truth and immortality, legends say.

Lord Krishna is also known as "Gopal" for his dedicated service to

cows as a cow-herd. He is also called "Manmohan" for the charming

melodies he used to play on his flute.

Devotees thronged at the temples of Lord Krishna from early morning,

Friday.

On this occasion hundreds of devotees visit the famous Krishna Mandir

at Mangal Bazaar, Lalitpur to offer worship to Lord Krishna.

The Krishna Mandir, a sixteenth century Shikhar-style temple carved

in stone and was constructed during the rule of King Siddhi Narshinga

Malla in Patan. It is renowned the world over for its artistic

excellence and is also in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list.

Various religious organizations celebrate the birth anniversary of

Lord Krishna on this day with colourful processions with idols of

Lord Krishna and sessions of devotional songs.

Especially women devotees spend the night singing devotional songs

and prayers, and dancing in temples decorated with oil lamps. (snn)
