Lord Krishna is also known as "Gopal" for his dedicated service to cows as a cow-herd. He is also called "Manmohan" for the charming melodies he used to play on his flute. Devotees thronged at the temples of Lord Krishna from early morning, Friday. On this occasion hundreds of devotees visit the famous Krishna Mandir at Mangal Bazaar, Lalitpur to offer worship to Lord Krishna. The Krishna Mandir, a sixteenth century Shikhar-style temple carved in stone and was constructed during the rule of King Siddhi Narshinga Malla in Patan. It is renowned the world over for its artistic excellence and is also in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list. Various religious organizations celebrate the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna on this day with colourful processions with idols of Lord Krishna and sessions of devotional songs. Especially women devotees spend the night singing devotional songs and prayers, and dancing in temples decorated with oil lamps.
