Press Trust of India Posted online: Saturday, April 30, 2005 at 1712 hours IST Rajkot, April 30: Greenery can be brought back to the arid Saurashtra and Kutch regions in Gujarat with the waters of vedic Saraswati river, flowing underground with abundant stocks of potable water, according to director of Saraswati Nadi Shodh Prakalp Dr S Kalyanaraman. The national water development agency, ministry of water resources, has drawn up plans to bring waters of re-born Saraswati river up to river Sabarmati in Gujarat, Kalyanaraman told reporters here today. The waters of Rajasthan canal from Harike reservoir after Bhakra Nangal and Pong dams on river Sutlej and Beas, have now reached beyond Danana in Jaisalmer district, he said adding, work has been going on to extend the canal upto Gedra road in Barmer district. "Then, it would leave only a distance of 150 kms to reach Gujarat," he added. Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in coordination with the central ground water authority successfully drilled 24 tubewells along the ancient course of river in Rajasthan taking into consideration parametres of ancient channel, nearby archeological site and existence of tectonic fault lines, he said. "Of the 24 bores, 23 were full of sweet, potable waters at the depth of 30 to 60 metres," he added. The coordinator of Kutch-Saurashtra unit of Saraswati Shodh Sanstha and a trustee of Arvindbhai Maniar Jankalyan trust, a leading local NGO, Pravinbhai Maniar, said the task to find out the waters of Saraswati would be undertaken with the help of ISRO, private and government agencies. http://www.expressindia.com/fullstory.php?newsid=45886#compstory
