Prince's private affair with India

Vijay Dutt

London, May 1, 2005

"I love India and can hardly wait to go there. But I will like to go

on a private visit so that I can see places on my own", Prince

Charles told Hindustan Times when asked if he intended to visit the

country in the near future.

Charles had come with Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, to

inaugurate the Mountbatten Auditorium in the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan,

London.

Camilla also echoed a similar sentiment. She said she was keen to

visit India and mentioned that her brother had visited the country

and he was totally fascinated. "He loves elephants".

She recalled her stay at Dr Karan Singh's apartments in Manali and

said she used to go on long walks.

Prince Charles said he appreciated Bhavan's effort to create

awareness about India's culture, art and music in Britain.

"I have respect for the Indian culture and heritage. I learnt a lot

about the country from my great uncle Earl Mountbatten. He related

to me fascinating tales about it and I was fortunate to be able go

there once with him," the Prince said while inaugurating the

auditorium.

He said he was trying to find ways of helping charities that are

working in India on projects like youth entrepreneurship, rural

health, water harvesting and the preservation of "India's unique

architectural heritage".
