Guest guest
Call to promote Ashoka pillar inscription KATHMANDU, April 28: The Ashoka Pillar located in Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha, should be widely publicised at the international level along with evidential and official description of the inscription written on it. This view was expressed at a workshop organised here today by the Lumbini Development Trust. The workshop stressed the need for widespread discussions at the national level for a common standpoint on the issue as various explanations have been offered regarding the inscription on the Ashok Pillar. Earlier, inaugurating the programme, Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Buddhi Raj Bajracharya noted that the Ashok pillar erected by Emperor Ashok proves that Lumbini is the birthplace of Lord Buddha. He expressed his hope that the workshop would come up with official evidence and pointed out the need for research into this historical fact. The minister, who is also Chairman of the Lumbini Development Trust, called on the trust to implement the master plan as early as possible by mobilising national and international resources. On the occasion, the Vice-chairman of the trust, Omkar Gauchan informed that Lumbini World University would be constituted in the immediate future. He also said a revolving fund of Rs. 10,000,000 had been constituted to award a prize worth $50,000 to any individual or organisation for the promotion of world peace. Other speakers also expressed their views on the occasion. http://www.gorkhapatra.org.np/pageloader.php? file=2005/04/29/topstories/main10
